Young basketball prospect Loren Christie has secured a dream full scholarship to a top-class US university to play the sport she loves. Two American tourists were rescued yesterday after their car plunged off a slipway into the sea on Valentia Island in Co Kerry.The couple, who are believed to be in their 70s and staying in Killarney, were rescued yesterday by a local man whose rescue skills are normally practised in the warmer waters of the Mediterranean.Mike Moriarty, 21, was drinking a pint at the pub in the Royal Hotel in Knightstown when a woman who was finishing her lunch tapped him on the shoulder and said she thought she saw something going off the slipway near the clock tower ledge.“I looked and couldn’t see anything but I walked over and I could see a silver car in the water,” said Mr Moriarty.He had arrived home on Sunday on holidays from Malta where he works on a yacht. BY PATRICK NIATO TOM Four young American missionaries who were reported trapped and stranded in the Sugu valley in Kagua, Southern Highlands, were safely rescued with other three Catholic nuns and a family from Bougainville. Rotinda Catholic church Priest Father Michael, said the four young missionaries were safely removed from where they were stationed. He said they have been safe and nothing has happened to them, but they may be traumatised or in anxiety as it was a new experience for the young missionaries. “But, the good news is that they are safe and have returned to Mt Hagen with the escort of the security forces,” he said. Southern Highlands provincial police commander Gideon Kauke said the team of 30 police and defence force soldiers were deployed upon receiving reports that the young missionaries were left stranded due to the intense tribal fighting in the Sugu valley area in Kagua-Erave district.
