Sir Michael Wilshaw, chief inspector of schools and pantomime hate figure of the teaching unions, can't remember if he owned his own cane in the 1970s, but, yes, he certainly used one on pupils. "I am sorry to say that I did," Wilshaw admits, with what appears disarmingly like a flush to the cheeks. "I was a head of year in London at a time when it was part of the disciplinary cultures and procedures of the school. It never worked. I stopped corporal punishment because I realised that it didn't work, because the youngsters you were using the cane on were used to physical violence, often at home. It sent out the wrong message. When I look back on it now I can't imagine why we ever did it." Sadly for some of the 442,000 teachers under his watch, that's pretty much where the regrets end. It is now two years since Wilshaw, former headteacher of Hackney's Mossbourne academy, and "hero" to education secretary Michael Gove for his undeniably impressive work in building one of Britain's best … [Read more...] about Sir Michael Wilshaw: Ofsted chief on pushy parents, staff clothing, and canes
The sentencing of Michael Flynn, US President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, has been delayed until March 2019. Flynn's lawyers requested a postponement in the sentencing hearing. In court on Tuesday, Flynn stood by his 2017 guilty plea of lying to the FBI. District Judge Emmet Sullivan warned he could be imprisoned and slammed the retired Army lieutenant general. "I can't hide my disgust, my disdain," Sullivan said. "Arguably you sold your country out." The judge agreed to the postponement so that Flynn could continue cooperating with the special counsel's Russia probe and potentially receive a reduced penalty, which he might not receive if he were sentenced as scheduled on Tuesday. Delayed sentencing Despite the judge's tongue-lashing, prosecutors had recommended leniency for Flynn, citing his cooperation in the Russia investigation. Flynn had pleaded guilty last year to making false statements to … [Read more...] about Trump’s ex-security adviser Michael Flynn sentencing delayed
ANDER HERRERA revealed a Churchillian rallying call from Manchester United’s old heads Michael Carrick and Ashley Young inspired their second-half fightback. Jose Mourinho’s men were left embarrassed after a first 45 minutes when City scored twice and could have had several more. It looked like the champions-elect were going to clinch the Premier League title by dishing out a thrashing to their rivals. But Young, 32, and 36-year-old Carrick had some strong words to say during the interval — and it seemed to work a treat. They talked about showing some pride and trying to spare their fans the ordeal of watching City celebrate their latest trophy right under their noses. Herrera, who was last night embroiled in a spit storm, said: “Everyone was talking but of course the oldest guys with the most experience — Ash, Mike — were in the dressing room.MANCHESTER UNITED TRANSFER NEWSKEANE TO HELP Roy Keane gave talk to Man Utd stars for pal Ole - but … [Read more...] about Manchester United star Ander Herrera reveals rallying call from Ashley Young and Michael Carrick inspired comeback at Man City
MICHAEL McIntyre has opened up about his moped mugging for the first time and revealed that it left him thinking “everyone was going to attack me”. The 42-year-old told The Sun’s TV Mag that he had been left “rattled” by the terrifying incident in June, which saw thugs snatch his £15k watch in a hammer attack while he was on the school run. Talking about the incident, in the supplement which is out tomorrow, he said: “When something like that happens to you the world seems very scary for a while. You are so rattled. “I literally thought everyone was going to attack me. Just after it, everybody was talking to me about it and saying they were sorry and telling me their own stories which suddenly made the world even more terrifying. You realise that so many people have been through stuff.” The father-of-two continued: “I talked about it in my live show because it felt like I couldn’t not.
