An Air New Zealand jet ended up doing a 13-hour loop, after developing a mid-air problem with its windshield. On Friday July 1, NZ287 was due to fly from Christchurch to Shanghai as a cargo-only flight. However, flight tracking data reveals the plane did a sharp turn more than halfway into the flight and returned to New Zealand. An Air New Zealand spokesperson said the plane was “diverted to Auckland as a precaution due to a minor abrasion to the windscreen”. Air NZ plane forced to turn around after airline forgot to remove reference to Taiwan
An Air New Zealand plane which was forced to turn around en route to Shanghai did so for diplomatic reasons, but not because of recent unease with New Zealand's relationship with China. Multiple sources say paperwork for the Air NZ flight 289, which returned to Auckland after several hours in the air included reference to Taiwan which China took to be an acknowledgement that the island was independent. Although they share language and culture, China and Taiwan have a highly unusual relationship, dating back to the Chinese revolution in 1949. Both countries claim sovereignty over the other. Passenger proposes to girlfriend on Air New Zealand flight
Shaw Elmsly got down on one knee on a flight from Nelson to Christchurch to propose to his girlfriend, Amy Langfield. Passengers on an Air New Zealand flight from Nelson to Christchurch were treated to some mile-high romance when a couple got engaged mid-flight. Shaw Elmsly got down on one knee in front of 50 passengers on the hour-long flight on Friday morning, asking girlfriend Amy Langfield to marry him – and she said yes. “The peer pressure of everyone on the plane watching... I was like, ‘I’ve got to answer this’,” Langfield joked on arrival at Christchurch Airport. Elmsly, who planned the proposal with the help of Air New Zealand staff, said he had been “very nervous” leading up to the flight, but had been trying to act normal so Langfield wouldn’t suspect anything. Air New Zealand flight bound for Shanghai, China turned around mid-flight
An Air New Zealand flight bound for Shanghai from Auckland was turned around mid-flight after it was discovered the aircraft didn't have permission to land in China. The aircraft left Auckland as scheduled just after 11:45pm on Saturday, but passengers were alerted by the pilot four and a half hours later that their plane would be flown back to New Zealand. A passenger on the flight, assistant professor at NYU Shanghai, Eric Hundman, tweeted details of the incident. I’ve just experienced a new level of China Bad: midway through our flight from Auckland to Shanghai, the pilot informs us that Chinese authorities had not given this plane permission to land, so we needed to turn around. The cold war between DeSantis and Trump is heating up
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has benefited from something of a media blitz this week. The New Yorker published a long profile , while the Washington Post reported that Florida voters are generally happy with his laissez-faire approach to the Covid-19 pandemic. Politico, meanwhile, reported that DeSantis has reeled in multiple donors who formerly backed Donald Trump — and that he hasn’t sought out Trump’s endorsement for his re-election. Those last two show just how significant the cold war between Trump and DeSantis really is. As Trump weighs whether to stage a third run for president in 2024, DeSantis is clearly making a play for the Republican nomination for president. He also got an unexpected gift when a federal grand jury indicted his 2018 opponent Andrew Gillum , meaning he can now boast that having already beat a corrupt Democrat, he is well-placed to vanquish whomever the party nominates to challenge him. It’s quite a turnaround from just … [Read more...] about The cold war between DeSantis and Trump is heating up
We now know the names of Republicans who asked for pardons after January 6. Remember them
On December 27, 2020, there was a call between then-President Trump, Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, and Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue. Trump’s pressure was relentless. They had to do more to investigate his voter fraud claims, he urged. Donoghue responded by telling Trump that the Justice Department just can’t snap its fingers and change the results of the election. Trump snapped back, ominously demanding: “Just say that the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me and the Republican congressmen.” That was an exact quote. Donoghue took notes. Today’s January 6 Committee hearing focused on the former president’s effort to twist the DOJ into his personal coup machine. The committee showed how Trump sought to force the DOJ to aid his multi-level pressure campaign to overturn the 2020 election. And when top officials refused, Trump tried to install someone who would — which culminated in an Oval Office showdown that could have changed the course of … [Read more...] about We now know the names of Republicans who asked for pardons after January 6. It’s going to be incredibly hard for Democrats to protect abortion rights
President Joe Biden encapsulated what he hoped Democratic voters would understand after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade : “This fall, Roe is on the ballot.” There is some evidence that this message is sticking. A new CBS News/YouGov poll found that 50 per cent of Democratic voters said that the decision makes them more likely to vote compared to 77 per cent of Republicans who say it will have no effect on their likeliness to vote, though that might be due to the fact Republicans are already motivated to vote this midterm election to win back the House and Senate. The bad news for Democrats and good news for Republicans is that 61 per cent of independents say that it will have no effect on how likely they are to vote. But a majority of voters – 64 per cent altogether – say they want to keep abortion legal in either all or most cases and 51 per cent say the court’s decision will make life worse. FiveThirtyEight shows that the generic ballot, which … [Read more...] about It’s going to be incredibly hard for Democrats to protect abortion rights
What we just heard about Trump, Pence and Giuliani on January 6th was beyond the worst-case scenario
They knew. They all knew. Today’s hearing focused on Donald Trump, John Eastman, and his allies’ effort to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the results of the 2020 election on January 6. According to testimony, key players in Trump’s inner circle — including Trump and Eastman themselves — knew that Pence overturning the election would be illegal, but pushed him to do it anyway. In other words, they knowingly launched an illegal attempted coup. The two in-person witnesses today were Pence’s former counsel Greg Jacob and retired federal judge Michael Luttig. Luttig is a well-respected conservative legal icon; so much so, he’s been considered for a Supreme Court nomination in the past. Ted Cruz and John Eastman were clerks for Luttig, and Pence reached out to Luttig ahead of January 6 for advice. Luttig advised that he did not have the authority to overturn the election. The hearing today went on to outline a damning timeline of events that would’ve read like a … [Read more...] about What we just heard about Trump, Pence and Giuliani on January 6th was beyond the worst-case scenario
