Mexico on the border
News / UK and world by Press Association April 4, 2018, 4:35 am FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter Frustrated by slow action on a major campaign promise, US president Donald Trump has said he wants to use the military to secure the US-Mexico border until his promised border wall is built. Mr Trump told reporters he has been discussing the idea with Defence Secretary Jim Mattis. “We’re going to be doing things militarily. Until we can have a wall and proper security, we’re going to be guarding our border with the military,” Mr Trump said, calling the move a “big step.” It was not immediately clear exactly how the proposal would work or what kind of troops Mr Trump wanted to deploy. But the White House later said Trump wanted to mobilise the National Guard. Federal law prohibits the use of active-duty service members for law enforcement inside the US, unless specifically authorised by Congress. … [Read more...] about Donald Trump proposes military secure Mexico border until wall is built
Asserting the situation had reached "a point of crisis", President Donald Trump signed a proclamation ordering the deployment of the National Guard to the US-Mexico border to fight illegal immigration. "The lawlessness that continues at our southern border is fundamentally incompatible with the safety, security, and sovereignty of the American people," Mr Trump wrote in a memo authorising the move, adding that his administration had "no choice but to act". The announcement came hours after Mr Trump pledged "strong action today" on immigration and a day after he said he announced he wanted to use the military to secure the southern border until his long-promised, stalled border wall is erected. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had been working with governors of the south-west border states to develop agreements on where and how many Guardsmen will be deployed. She suggested some troops could have begun arriving as soon as Wednesday night, though other administration … [Read more...] about Trump deploys National Guard to the US-Mexico border to fight illegal immigration
US President Donald Trump has called on the National Guard to defend the border with Mexico. The order - in the form of a signed memorandum - follows months of frustration for the president as he struggles to fund his long-promised wall and follows his expressing concern over a "caravan" of 1,000 migrants from Central America that he believes is in pursuit of a better life in the US. President Trump has warned that the problem of illegal immigration into the US from Mexico is reaching a "crisis point" and threatened to withdraw foreign aid to Honduras - the country of origin of many of the convoy's participants. The signed on Wednesday evening states that "the security of the United States is imperilled by a drastic surge of illegal activity on the southern border". Citing his predecessors George W Bush and Barack Obama summoning the National Guard to the southern border in 2006 and 2012 respectively, Trump's memo reads: "The crisis at our southern border once … [Read more...] about Mexico border wall: Why is Donald Trump deploying the National Guard?
President Donald Trump has said that he wants to send between 2,000 and 4,000 National Guard members to the US-Mexico border and keep them there until the wall he wishes to build is completed. Speaking to reporters as he flew back from event in West Virginia, Mr Trump was asked how many troops would be dispatched to the four states that border Mexico. “Anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000,” he said. “We’ll probably keep them or a large portion of them, until the wall is built.” Mr Trump’s comments came a day after it was announced he had signed an order to deploy National Guard troops to help “protect” the border with Mexico. “It’s time to act,” said Kirstjen Nielsen, the secretary of homeland security, speaking to reporters at a White House briefing. “We do hope the deployment begins immediately. We’re working with all haste.” In the memo signed Mr Trump on Wednesday evening, the president called … [Read more...] about President Trump vows to send 2,000 to 4,000 troops to Mexico border
