Congress is heading toward a post-election showdown over President Trump's wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, as GOP leaders signal they're willing to engage in hardball tactics that could spark a partial government shutdown and the president revs up midterm crowds for the wall, a centerpiece of his 2016 campaign and a top White House priority. Mr. Trump is promising voters at rallies across the country that Republicans will bring tougher border security in campaign speeches that echo those that propelled him to office two years ago. House Speaker Paul Ryan, promised a "big fight" over the border wall money and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has not ruled out a mini-shutdown as GOP leaders look to help Trump "get what he's looking for" on the wall. "Democrats want to abolish America's borders and allow drugs and gangs to pour into our country," Mr. Trump said without evidence Wednesday during a swing through Erie, Pennsylvania. "Right after the election we're doing something … [Read more...] about Congress heads toward post-election fight over U.S.-Mexico border wall
Mexico border wall
Plans for the proposed physical barrier between Mexico and the U.S. have failed to live up to expectations. Prototypes have proved to be easily breached, according to reports in America. Donald Trump proposed the "non-penetrable" wall. But a report has surfaced suggesting that several test teams were able to breach sections of the wall. The heavily redacted report showed how the $20 million Otay Mesa border wall designs will need to undergo significant improvements before any construction plans can be implemented. “The wall is never going to be all end all, but what it is able to do is it able to slow down illegal traffic crossing the border and gives the border patrol not only a safer environment to work in, but it also allows us time to identify and interdict that traffic and deploy appropriate resources to deal with it,” CBP union spokesman Joshua Wilson said. “What I think we'll see is a hybrid of several different designs taking the best features of each.” … [Read more...] about America-Mexico border wall ‘breached 13 times’ in tests
US President Donald Trump says his administration will begin work on a section of his promised US-Mexico border wall in San Diego, at the request of the major California county."San Diego has asked us to go forward with their section of the wall in California and rather than not doing that and letting them lobby for us with Governor Brown we decided to do it," Trump told reporters as his cabinet met at the White House.State legislators and California's Democratic governor, Jerry Brown, have been hostile toward Trump's plan to make the border nearly impervious for immigrants coming to the United States illegally, but some enclaves have disagreed. The Board of Supervisors for San Diego, which is California's second-most populous county and sits on the border with Mexico, in April voted to support Trump's legal challenge to the state designating itself a "sanctuary state" hospitable to immigrants. … [Read more...] about Trump to go forward with Cali border wall
US President Donald Trump has called on the National Guard to defend the border with Mexico. The order - in the form of a signed memorandum - follows months of frustration for the president as he struggles to fund his long-promised wall and follows his expressing concern over a "caravan" of 1,000 migrants from Central America that he believes is in pursuit of a better life in the US. President Trump has warned that the problem of illegal immigration into the US from Mexico is reaching a "crisis point" and threatened to withdraw foreign aid to Honduras - the country of origin of many of the convoy's participants. The signed on Wednesday evening states that "the security of the United States is imperilled by a drastic surge of illegal activity on the southern border". Citing his predecessors George W Bush and Barack Obama summoning the National Guard to the southern border in 2006 and 2012 respectively, Trump's memo reads: "The crisis at our southern border once … [Read more...] about Mexico border wall: Why is Donald Trump deploying the National Guard?
It was the kind of story destined to take a dark turn through the conservative news media and grab president Donald Trump’s attention: a vast horde of migrants were making their way through Mexico toward the United States and no one was stopping them. “Mysterious group deploys ‘caravan’ of illegal aliens headed for US border,” warned FrontPage Magazine, a site run by David Horowitz, a conservative commentator. The Gateway Pundit, a website that was most recently in the news for spreading conspiracies about the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, suggested the real reason the migrants were trying to enter the United States was to collect social welfare benefits. And as the president often does when immigration is at issue, he saw a reason for Americans to be afraid. “Getting more dangerous. ‘Caravans’ coming,” a Twitter post from Mr Trump read.
