Sadiq Khan demands ‘explanation’ from Met Police after photos of Boris Johnson at lockdown drinks emerge
London mayor Sadiq Khan has written to the Met Police asking for a "detailed explanation" of its partygate probe - after claiming photos showed the PM was "caught red-handed" at an event for which he was not fined. Mr Khan has asked the Metropolitan Police's acting commissioner Sir Stephen House how decisions were made about whether fines should be issued for lockdown breaches in individual cases. Earlier, the mayor told Sky News that newly-released photos showing Boris Johnson holding a drink at a leaving do in November 2020 were a "smoking gun". Politics live: Angela Rayner slams 'rotten culture' in Number 10 A spokesman for the Met said it had nothing to add to the statement issued last week when it said the investigation into lockdown-breaking events in Downing Street and Whitehall had concluded, with 126 cases involving 83 people being referred for fixed penalty notices. 17% drop in police raids on cannabis farms
By Jim Reed Published 13 August 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The number of police raids on commercial cannabis farms has dropped by more than 17% in the last year, Freedom of Information figures suggest. The 22 police forces that responded in full reported a fall in farms identified from 2,038 to 1,689. Drug researchers say cuts mean less money for complex investigations and specialist resources like helicopters. The National Police Chiefs' Council says the drugs market is complex and the fall is due to a number of factors. The new figures were obtained through Freedom of Information requests sent by the Victoria Derbyshire programme to all 45 police forces in the UK. Of the 22 forces that sent full replies, 16 reported a fall in raids and detections. Budget cuts The Metropolitan Police recorded a drop from 203 to 140 farms identified from … [Read more...] about 17% drop in police raids on cannabis farms

Damian Green sacked over porn cover-up as Theresa May suffers third Cabinet departure in two months
Damian Green was ordered to resign as First Secretary of State on Thursday night after a Cabinet Office investigation found he had misled the public and MPs over what he knew about pornography found on an office computer. The Prime Minister’s de facto deputy and closest ally was told to resign by Theresa May after she told him his conduct had breached the ministerial code of conduct and “fallen short” of the behaviour expected of ministers. He is the third Cabinet minister to be forced from office in the past two months and means that Mrs May ends the year with another crisis after she had appeared to turn around her fortunes with success in the Brexit talks. A seven-week inquiry, originally launched after a complaint of inappropriate behaviour towards women, found that he had misled the public in two statements he made last month denying the police had ever told him about the material being found in a raid on his office in 2008. In fact, the police had raised it with his … [Read more...] about Damian Green sacked over porn cover-up as Theresa May suffers third Cabinet departure in two months

Sue Gray: The ‘straight-shooting’ investigator behind partygate report
Sue Gray, the woman charged with investigating partygate, is expected to deliver her long-awaited report on Wednesday. The civil servant has been freed to publish the findings of her investigation into the Downing Street parties after the Met Police completed its investigation into breaches of Covid restrictions. But who is the woman holding the potentially damaging report, and why was she chosen? Here, we explain all. Last orders for Boris? In the 1980s, Ms Gray briefly paused her Civil Service career to buy a pub in Newry close to the Irish border during The Troubles . If Boris Johnson needed evidence that his inquisitor-in-chief is no pushover, then being landlady of a pub in Northern Ireland's “bandit country” shows she is no soft touch. Ms Gray had the task of investigating a series of alleged lockdown parties held in Downing Street and across government during the Covid pandemic .
