Partygate: Met Police acted with ‘integrity’ over lockdown party inquiry and made decisions ‘based on facts’, says Met chief
The Met Police acted with "integrity" during its partygate investigation and officers made decisions "based on the facts and were proper", the force's acting commissioner has said. Sir Stephen House, giving evidence to the London Assembly's police and crime committee, defended the nearly four-month investigation into lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street and Whitehall. The investigation has come under criticism for only fining Boris Johnson once following the publication of the Sue Gray inquiry which revealed partying in Downing Street while COVID restrictions were in place. Challenged over why the prime minister did not receive a fine for attending a leaving party for his former communications director Lee Cain on 13 November 2020, Sir Stephen said he was "confident of the integrity of the decisions" taken. Photos of the gathering emerged two days before Ms Gray's full inquiry was published. Met Police chief reveals why Boris Johnson avoided partygate fine for raising a toast in No 10
The acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner has indicated that Boris Johnson escaped a fine for attending his former director of communications’ leaving party because police considered it a work event. Sir Stephen House said he had personally been involved in decisions over the partygate investigation and did not believe the Prime Minister breached the law numerous times. Appearing before the London Assembly police and crime committee, Sir Stephen insisted he was confident of the integrity of the investigation . Scotland Yard came under intense pressure to explain why Mr Johnson was not given a fixed penalty notice when photographs emerged showing him raising a toast at a gathering to mark the departure of Lee Cain, his former director of communications, on Nov 13 2020. Sir Stephen House, giving evidence to the London Assembly's police and crime committee, defended the nearly four-month investigation into lockdown-breaking parties in Downing Street and Whitehall. The investigation has come under criticism for only fining Boris Johnson once , especially after the Sue Gray inquiry, published on Wednesday, revealed many instances of partying in Downing Street while COVID restrictions were in place. No evidence Boris Johnson was serial Covid rule-breaker, Met Police chief says
Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing There was "no clear evidence" that Prime Minister Boris Johnson had breached Covid-19 rules many times in Downing Street, the Metropolitan Police's acting chief has said. Sir Stephen House said the decisions made by officers investigating lockdown parties at No 10 were correct. The Met Police issued 126 fines to 83 people, including the prime minister. But the force has faced calls to explain why Mr Johnson did not receive fines for other events he attended. At one gathering on 13 November, 2020, Mr Johnson was pictured drinking with staff in Downing Street at a leaving do for the prime minister's former communications chief, Lee Cain. The Met Police has handed out fines for Covid breaches inside No 10 on this date but not to the prime minister. The incriminating new images of Boris Johnson that could put the fizz back into partygate
Boris Johnson raises a glass of wine and toasts the departure of his director of communications. The glass of fizz (possibly champagne) is gripped in his right hand, a smile on the Prime Minister’s face as he and at least seven members of his Downing Street press team say their farewells to Lee Cain, his departing official spokesman who had fallen out with Mr Johnson’s young fiancee Carrie Symonds (now his wife). Yet eight days before this incriminating photograph was taken on November 13 2020, the Prime Minister had plunged England into a second national lockdown. Pubs were shut, travel banned and socialising indoors or even in back gardens prohibited. On the table in the photograph’s foreground appears prima facie evidence of what could only best be described as a party. There are two bottles of bubbly, four bottles of wine (two red and two white) and half a bottle of gin. Most of the booze has been drunk bar one bottle of unopened fizz, visible at the very edge of the picture. … [Read more...] about The incriminating new images of Boris Johnson that could put the fizz back into partygate

While 79 people were able to evacuate Mariupol to Zaporizhia Thursday, Ukraine Deputy Prime Minister said "everything is going very slowly."
