As New Europe reported last Sunday, a new friendship treaty between France and Germany was signed by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on 22 January. The treaty was signed in the presence of European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, and European Council President, Donald Tusk, in the town hall of Aachen. The Franco-German Treaty which is presented as a follow-up pact to the Élysée Treaty signed in Paris on January 22, 1963, gives a clear indication of who will be in the driver’s seat, and how Europe will be run, post-Brexit. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday she wanted Britain and the European Union to divorce on good terms, Trend reports referring to Reuters. “I care now that we and Britain divorce in a good process so that afterwards we can still work closely together in the areas where we must cooperate - on defense, on domestic security, on policing, on combating terrorism, and in trade too, and so that Britain can take part in our research projects if they want,” Merkel said during a question and answer session with citizens. This is something that they both agreed to do back in about March of last year. So it hasn't been whipped out of the air just because of the Gilets Jaunes protests and the troubles that have been occurring in Germany as well. But I think it's possible that the timing is being accelerated as a form of public relations in the European Union to go against those protests.
