The London four-piece consists of singer Ellie Roswell, bassist Theo Ellis, guitarist Joff Oddie and drummer Joel Amey. Roswell and Oddie originally formed Wolf Alice as an acoustic duo and got their name from a short story by writer Angela Carter. They decided to add electronic elements to their sound and recruited Rosewell’s childhood friend Sadie Cleary on bass and James DC on drums. Amey later joined the group in 2012 after their original drummer broke his wrist. Cleary left the same year to pursue her studies and was replaced by Ellis. In 2013, they released their first physical single Fluffy – which was later followed up by their debut EP Blush. The winner of the 2018 Mercury Prize is Wolf Alice for their album Visions Of A Life. Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine and Lily Allen were among the 12 shortlisted acts this year. It was the fourth nomination for Arctic Monkeys, with the Sheffield band winning the 2006 prize for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. They returned to the scene in May this year with concept album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, although fans were divided over frontman Alex Turner's sudden change of track from guitar rifts to glam rock. Florence and the Machine celebrated their third nomination, this time for their fourth album, High As Hope. Mercury Prize winner Talvin Singh will be returning to his home town to help launch London’s first ever Borough of Culture. The Leytonstone-born musician, who has worked with Madonna, Björk and Massive Attack, is coming back to Waltham Forest for the event, it was announced today. He will collaborate with young musicians in the borough, composing a soundtrack for Welcome to the Forest, which will see a history of the area beamed on to the walls of the town in a laser light show. Waltham Forest beat 21 others to win the £1.35 million Borough of Culture competition. Its plans include a film festival honouring another local — Alfred Hitchcock, born above a grocer’s store in Leytonstone.
