The McDonald’s drive-thru at 30: A journey back to an exotic experience

December 29, 2016 by www.bbc.co.uk

By John Newton Published 29 December 2016 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing It is 30 years since McDonald's opened its first UK drive-thru - 1986 being a year of firsts for a brand that now has 1,200 restaurants across Britain. The figures show consumers really are "lovin' it", yet the concept is also ubiquitous - a familiar, disposable and repeatable experience. So how was it for customers when McDonald's was still new? Was what is now commonplace ever thought a thrill? It is 1975. UK cinemas are showing an advert for a brand whose name, at this point, is principally linked in the national consciousness to a nursery rhyme farmer. To the viewer, "golden arches" means nothing. They don't know chips by another name smell as sweetly. A Big Mac is just an oversized anorak. The ad comes a year after McDonald's opens its first UK restaurant in Woolwich, London. Few Brits, … [Read more...] about The McDonald’s drive-thru at 30: A journey back to an exotic experience

What’s it really like to work at McDonald’s?

April 14, 2015 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Justin Parkinson Published 15 April 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing In 1955 the first McDonald's franchise restaurant opened in the US. Now it is the world's biggest fast food chain, employing 1.9 million people. The word "McJob" has become a term of derision, but what's it like to actually work there? "Hello, can I help you?" asks the smiling young woman behind the counter. Within about 20 seconds of receiving the order, an Egg and Sausage McMuffin is on the counter. The woman smiles again and moves on to the next customer. The restaurant's only part-full but the serving area is still busy. That's the way McDonald's likes it. Staff are set time targets for service. Efficiency and profit margins are key. It's fair to say that, in the 60 years since the first franchised McDonald's restaurant opened, portrayals of its workplaces have not been universally … [Read more...] about What’s it really like to work at McDonald’s?

Swindon wheelchair user ‘humiliated’ by airline treatment

August 10, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Dan O'Brien Published 14 minutes ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing A woman who uses an electric wheelchair said she was left feeling stressed and humiliated by the way she was treated by an airline on a holiday flight. Geraldine Freeman, from Swindon, flew from Bristol Airport to Tenerife in the Canary Islands with Jet2 in July. She said her outbound journey was "embarrassing, uncomfortable, stressful and humiliating" because of the "very undignified way" she was treated. The airline has apologised and said it is improving staff training. Ms Freeman told BBC Radio Wiltshire she is no stranger to foreign travel and like many passengers with disabilities, she has endured some horror stories over the years, but her recent experience has prompted her to speak out. She has disabilities caused by thalidomide and has no legs, and told Jet2 about her … [Read more...] about Swindon wheelchair user ‘humiliated’ by airline treatment

France whale: Hopes fading for lost mammal stuck in River Seine

August 7, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Leo Sands & George Wright Published 2 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing French rescuers desperately trying to save a beluga whale trapped in the River Seine say there is little hope it will survive. Rescuers had hoped to help the lost whale regain its appetite and the energy needed to return to sea. The visibly malnourished mammal was first spotted in the river on Tuesday, around 70km (44 miles) north of Paris. After failed attempts to encourage it to swim out, rescuers are pessimistic about its chances of survival. So far rescuers have offered up frozen herring and live trout for the four-metre whale to eat, but the animal does not appear to have accepted either. Authorities have considered injecting the stranded animal with vitamins to stimulate its appetite and help it to make the long 160km (100 mile) return journey back down the river … [Read more...] about France whale: Hopes fading for lost mammal stuck in River Seine

Some McDonald’s and KFC branches are banning under-18s for anti-social behaviour

March 1, 2016 by www.bbc.co.uk

Published 1 March 2016 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Some branches of McDonald's and KFC are banning under-18s from eating inside because of anti-social behaviour. It's after a fight broke out between 20 teenagers near the Meir Park area of Stoke-on-Trent a few weeks ago. Eight people were arrested after police sent armed officers and a helicopter to reports of a fight and gunshots. They've now been bailed. Now it means under-18s will only be able to dine with an adult. Otherwise they'll have to take their food away. McDonald's says the ban is to protect other customers and it'll stay in place for the "time being". The company insists it's not specifically targeting young people but wants to address the problem, which, in this case are under 18s. Newsbeat went to Stoke-on-Trent to find out what people think about it. Scott is 26 and thinks McDonald's … [Read more...] about Some McDonald’s and KFC branches are banning under-18s for anti-social behaviour
