Brazil Covid variant in UK: Where was it found, is it deadlier and do vaccines work?
The UK's first cases of the Brazil variant of coronavirus have been detected, with up to six people infected with the mutant strain. An urgent search was launched to find one of the six as officials have no idea who they are or where they live. That's because that person didn't fill in their test registration card. The P.1 variant is one of four variants of concern, and measures were brought in to prevent it from being brought into the country. However, they were too late, as a handful of travellers, who returned despite a ban on direct flights and days before quarantine hotels were brought in, have now tested positive for the variant, which may spread more rapidly and may respond less well to existing vaccines. Get the day's biggest stories delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up for the Mirror newsletter here. The Brazil variant was first detected in the city of Manaus in December. DOI Faye Brookes’ favouritism row denied as ITV source says she’s had no special treatment
An ITV source has shot down rumours that Faye Brookes has caused a row with her Dancing On Ice co-stars over 'accusations of favouritism.' The show returned on Sunday night with Faye transformed into Julia Roberts as she performed a stunning routine to Roy Orbison's Oh, Pretty Woman with partner Matt Evers for movie week. Faye, 33, scored an impressive 34.5 out of 40 and is now the hot favourite to win the show. However, a source claimed that trouble was brewing behind the scenes as Faye has reportedly been having extra help with her routines. A source at the show told The Sun that Faye and Matt have been working with ITV's Creative Director Dan Whitson - prompting their co-stars to moan about the former Corrie star being gifted a huge advantage. The allegations came after Dan was seen training with the couple in Manchester as they perfected their routine. However, a source at the channel has told the Mirror that Dan works closely with all of the couples taking part and … [Read more...] about DOI Faye Brookes’ favouritism row denied as ITV source says she’s had no special treatment
COVID-19: Pandemic is pushing more people to buy illegal sleeping pills and anxiety drugs online, evidence suggests
Sky News has seen evidence the pandemic may be pushing more people to buy illegal sleeping pills and anxiety drugs online. Purchasing benzodiazepines, or "benzos", without a prescription is against the law and amounts to possession of a Class C drug in the UK. Figures show a rise in the number of diazepam and alprazolam tablets being bought illegally in the UK and sent for testing to a public laboratory. WEDINOS, the laboratory run by Public Health Wales, tests drugs sent in anonymously as part of a harm reduction service. While it is not a way of quantifying drug use in the UK it can monitor drug trends. Advertisement Figures sent to Sky News from WEDINOS show the number of benzodiazepines sent in increased during the pandemic year, by 25% in 2020, compared with the year before. Coronavirus UK latest news – Covid cases and deaths falling slower Matt Hancock warns as he confirms 20m now vaccinated
THE Brazilian "variant of concern" that has been discovered in the UK could disrupt plans to lift all lockdown measures in the UK by June 21 an expert has suggested. Asked about the variant on Times Radio, Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College said the public should be "somewhat worried but not total panic, perhaps." But he suggested the Brazilian variant could have a real impact on the UK's jab rollout, saying "The way I think about it is it's a bit like, and I think about the effect that the Kent variant had... it just slowed everything up." If the variant does slow the UK jab rollout, Boris Johnson's lockdown roadmap will almost certainly be impacted as one of the key conditions for June 21 lifting of measures is vaccines continuing at their current pace. Any slowing down of the rollout could potentially push the June 21 date back by weeks or even months, as the Prime Minister made clear when he first announced his plans on February 22.
