Salman Rushdie’s condition heading ‘in right direction’ after stabbing

August 14, 2022 by news.sky.com

Sir Salman Rushdie's injuries remain "severe" after he was stabbed, but his condition is heading "in the right direction", the author's agent has said. The 75-year-old was airlifted to hospital and underwent hours of surgery following the attack on stage in Chautauqua, New York state, on Friday. His literary agent, Andrew Wylie, said: "He's off the ventilator, so the road to recovery has begun. "It will be long; the injuries are severe, but his condition is headed in the right direction." His son Zafar Rushdie said Sir Salam remained in "critical condition" and said his injuries would be "life-changing" but added: "His usual feisty and defiant sense of humour remains intact." Retired doctor wrongly prescribed sex-change treatments to patients as young as nine, tribunal hears

May 19, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

A retired gastroenterologist wrongly prescribed sex-change treatments to seven transgender patients, one of which was just nine years old, a tribunal has heard. Dr Michael Webberley provided puberty blockers and hormones via GenderGP, an online gender clinic which he ran with his wife and fellow GP, Dr Helen Webberley. A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) panel found him guilty of various charges after he was accused of failing to provide good clinical care to seven patients between February 2017 and June 2019. In a number of cases, he had attended to patients after restrictions had been placed on his wife’s practice. But several doctors raised concerns about his treatment with the General Medical Council (GMC) and he was later suspended. With all seven patients, he was found guilty of providing or allowing treatment that was “not clinically indicated” or had been prescribed without adequate tests, examinations or assessments. 'Outside expertise' The tribunal … [Read more...] about Retired doctor wrongly prescribed sex-change treatments to patients as young as nine, tribunal hears

Prison death investigations in Wales ‘too slow’

May 11, 2018 by www.bbc.co.uk

By Jenny Johnson Published 11 May 2018 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Prison deaths are not being investigated quickly or rigorously enough, it has been claimed. Campaign group Inquest said a number of cases have raised concerns about health and safety in Welsh prisons. It also claimed natural cause death inquiries have been hit by funding cuts to the watchdog - the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO). But Elizabeth Moody, acting PPO, rejected the allegations and said targets were being met. It comes as one Welsh MP warned some deaths in prisons could be perceived as amounting to the "death penalty" if they were "tolerated as normal." Some of the ombudsman reports into deaths have questioned aspects of healthcare for prisoners, and the care on offer for vulnerable and at-risk prisoners. Russian soldiers ‘didn’t know we were invading Ukraine until we crossed the border’

August 13, 2022 by metro.co.uk

A Russian paratrooper has revealed in a new memoir that his fellow soldiers had no idea they were invading Ukraine until they were already deployed on the battlefield. Pavel Filatiev, 33, a former elite soldier who later quit on medical grounds, details how his unit was amongst the first to be stationed by the Ukrainian border in the days prior to the invasion. Armed with nothing but a rusty machine gun and an ill-fitting uniform, Filatiev claims he had no idea he was being sent to invade Ukraine until he was awoken by the sound of gunfire in the back of an army truck crossing the border at 2am. Filatiev asked: ‘Are we firing at advancing Ukrainians? ‘Where we were going and why wasn’t clear. It was clear that a real war had begun. I found out [we had] orders to go to Kherson.’ In a series of devastating extracts published by Meduza, Filatiev outlines the major failings at the heart of Vladimir Putin’s military machine and reveals how poor equipment, low morale … [Read more...] about Russian soldiers ‘didn’t know we were invading Ukraine until we crossed the border’

She has some light perception and while the heat doesn't directly affect her, protecting herself from the sun's rays can be difficult when she wants to get out and about. "I don't wear sunglasses because they dim my light perception," she says. "I normally look at the darkness of objects either side of me to keep myself in a straight line, that's less easy with sunglasses on.
