NHS worker wins £1m lottery jackpot just before getting all-clear from cancer
An NHS worker has said she feels "really lucky" after winning a £1m lottery jackpot just before getting the all-clear from her breast cancer treatment. Maxine Lloyd said she was keeping an eye on her fiance, Wayne Tilbury, who had recently collapsed with a chest infection, at 1.30am when she decided to "have a flutter" on the National Lottery's £30m Mega Cash Showdown Instant Win game. The 50-year-old thought a phone notification she received during her first batch of radiography treatment was a message from her partner - but it was actually a message from her bank to say the winnings had been transferred into her account. In the space of two weeks, Mr Tilbury, a 57-year-old builder, was taken to A&E with the chest infection, Ms Lloyd rang the bell to mark the successful ending of her cancer treatment, and the couple won £1m. "I feel really lucky," Ms Lloyd said. NHS Lanarkshire restricts visiting over abuse of maternity staff
Published 20 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing One of Scotland's largest health boards has restricted visits to a maternity unit over the "almost daily" verbal abuse directed at staff. NHS Lanarkshire said employees in the postnatal wards at University Hospital Wishaw had been targeted. And in one incident staff were "chased out" of a ward by family members unwilling to leave. As a result the board has introduced a change to its policy for second visitor nominations. Those who wish to visit a patient will now be required to make a two-hour appointment in advance. Earlier this year medical staff warned the levels of abuse directed at them was worse than ever before. ‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
Dawn Butler has opened up about one of the toughest parts of her cancer diagnosis – how to tell her loved ones without worrying them. The Labour MP, 52, has spoken candidly about it, revealing earlier this year that she thought she might die after receiving the news following a routine mammogram. She has now teamed up with Metro.co.uk to launch the campaign A Million Missed Mammograms to try and persuade those yet to have a screening to get one booked. ‘You can survive breast cancer, and the earlier you find it the better,’ the former minister said. Ms Butler has thankfully recovered, but she had to endure some incredibly difficult days along the way. On top of the uncomfortable examination, the operation to remove cancerous cells and the fear her diagnosis may become more invasive, she also found herself struggling with something many might deem relatively simple – telling her family, friends and colleagues about what she was going through. The Brent Central MP … [Read more...] about ‘I’m not dying, but I have some bad news’: How MP broke news she had breast cancer
Paramedics ‘thought dying man was faking seizures to avoid being arrested’
The family of a man who died from a series of seizures after being arrested have accused medical staff of treating him like a ‘faker’. Raphael Gill, 29, had a total of six seizures and died in hospital in November 2019 after being detained for drug offences and speeding. Officers requested an ambulance ‘multiple times’ as he had the first three seizures in the back of their police car. When paramedics did arrive, Raphael, who had a history of seizures, was not medically assessed, official documents say. Once in the ambulance, he had a fourth but was only seen by doctors on the floor of A&E at Lewisham and Greenwich Hospital after his fifth. Before his sixth and final seizure, the father-of-two was recorded saying: ‘I’m going to die’ before taking his last breath. Talking to Channel 4 News , the family accused medical staff of not reacting quickly enough, saying he was ‘treated like a nobody’. They are unhappy with a specific moment in which a paramedic … [Read more...] about Paramedics ‘thought dying man was faking seizures to avoid being arrested’
Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
"Everything that's happened has been unexpected," Josh Groban says of his career. As a teenager, he studied acting, but that high lyric baritone could not be denied: By 2007, Groban was the No. 1 pop artist in the U.S., thanks in part to his 2003 hit "You Raise Me Up." In 2015, he was offered a starring role in the Broadway musical Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 , an electro-pop adaptation of War and Peace. That earned him a Tony nomination. Now, a few TV cameos ( The Office, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ) over the years have evolved into his own show, Netflix's The Good Cop, from Monk creator Andy Breckman. Groban plays Tony "TJ" Caruso, a by-the-book New York City police officer; Tony Danza co-stars as his dad, a disgraced ex-cop. The 10-episode series debuts September 21, which also happens to be the release date for Groban's eighth studio album, Bridges . "The timing was perfect," he says of Good Cop 's four-month shoot. "It fit right between finishing the album … [Read more...] about Josh Groban on his new Netflix show, his new album and his canine collaborator
Internet blasts woman ‘obsessed’ with her neighbor’s daily sleeping routine
The internet has backed a woman who is fed up with her neighbor being "obsessed" with her, looking through her bedroom window, criticizing her for waking up too late in the morning. In a post shared on Mumsnet last Sunday, the woman, who goes by the username Mississipi71, explained that since she only has blinds on her window and no curtains, her neighbor is able to see what times she wakes up and goes to bed, and doesn't seem too pleased. "I overheard my neighbor talking about what time I get up in the day," she said in her post, adding that she "even heard her saying "it is 11.30 am now, what time did she get up 11.15?" She explained that because of the side effects from anxiety medicines that takes she can't go into a deep sleep and never really has a full night's sleep, but since she's retired and has no children, what time she wakes up is only "down to [her]." She added: "It wasn't just one comment. She has alluded to it several times. Once when she talked about … [Read more...] about Internet blasts woman ‘obsessed’ with her neighbor’s daily sleeping routine
