0 Have your say Rudy Gestede and Martin Braithwaite scored in the first half as Middlesbrough dumped dismal north-east rivals Sunderland out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win at the Riverside Stadium. Gestede took just 10 minutes to heap more woe on the Championship’s bottom club and Braithwaite’s effort just before the break effectively ensured the visitors’ sole remaining focus this season will be avoiding a second consecutive relegation.Black Cats boss Chris Coleman may take heart from an improved second half display from his injury-hit side, but they had only a Josh Maja shot and a Tyias Browning header which was brilliantly saved by Boro keeper Darren Randolph to show for it.In contrast Boro look to be heading in a different direction under new boss Tony Pulis, who made three changes in a strong line-up, which included the respective returns of both his goalscorers. In predictably chilly conditions at the Riverside Stadium, the hosts took advantage of the time … [Read more...] about Middlesbrough 2 Sunderland 0: Pulis dreaming of Wembley again
Hartlepool United have now gone eight games without a win after pressing the self destruct button at Dagenham. Danny Sparkes opened the scoring just before the break but a Michael Woods header squared things up only for Michael Cheek, Fejiri Okenabirhie and Sparkes to win it for the hosts in the second period. Woods netted a late consolation, his second of the afternoon, for Pools. Manager Craig Harrison made two changes from the side who drew 2-2 with Gateshead on New Year's Day. One of them was enforced as Rhys Oates failed a late fitness test on a dead leg, Blair Adams came into the side in his place. The other saw Devante Rodney drop to the bench with Liam Donnelly moving into midfield and Carl Magnay coming in from injury to play right back. Pools had to weather a storm at Victoria Road in the opening exchanges. Cheek had the best chance to open the scoring - hitting the bar with a header from close range and almost turning in the rebound, but for a quality interception by Michael … [Read more...] about Dagenham 4 Hartlepool United 2: Pools press self destruct button as winless run extends to eight games

A stoppage-time equaliser from Steve Cook robbed Wigan Athletic of what would have been a thoroughly-deserved FA Cup giant-killing at Premier League Bournemouth. The visitors had led 2-0 after half an hour through Will Grigg and Nick Powell, an advantage they took into the interval. Grigg reacted quickest to a loose ball in the Bournemouth box on four minutes after Gavin Massey had tried to get his head to Reece James’ cross. Then, on 29 minutes, Powell struck a 25-yard free-kick beyond the clutches of Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc, via a kind deflection off the wall. Bournemouth pulled one back 10 minutes after the restart through Lys Mousset, with a deflection off Dan Burn seeing the ball fly into the top corner. That was the first goal Christian Walton had conceded in seven matches since returning from a broken leg - but it looked as though Latics would hold on for a famous win. There was major drama just before the 90-minute mark, when substitute Ivan Toney raced clean … [Read more...] about Bournemouth 2 Wigan Athletic 2
