HSBC suspends banker who joked ‘who cares if Miami is underwater?’
HSBC has suspended a senior banker who claimed warnings about the climate crisis were ‘unsubstantiated’ during an incendiary presentation, it has been claimed. The head of responsible investing at the city giant questioned whether anyone cared about cities being underwater in future. Now Stuart Kirk is expected to be investigated following the event in London last week – despite the comments reportedly being pre-agreed with bosses. Mr Kirk also claimed central bankers have exaggerated global warming risks, according to the Financial Times . Now the bank is under pressure to sack him following the presentation, which was titled: ‘Why investors need not worry about climate risk’. Backlash as Biden says high gas prices are part of “incredible transition”
President Joe Biden drew a biting rebuke on Twitter and Fox News after saying that record-high gas prices are part of an "incredible transition" away from fossil fuels. Biden made the comment during a press conference Monday in Tokyo, Japan, as part of a diplomatic trip to Asia. The president's foes quickly pounced on the comment as proof that Biden's clean-energy policies were woefully out of touch and harming the American public with heightened gas prices. Appearing at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Biden was asked by a reporter if Americans should expect a recession as gas prices remain high and the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates to rein in historically high inflation. Biden said he didn't expect a recession, pointing to the low unemployment rate and how America's economy is growing faster than China's for the first time in decades. While Biden acknowledged the U.S. has problems, he said they are "less consequential than the … [Read more...] about Backlash as Biden says high gas prices are part of “incredible transition”

Disney, Amazon and Apple in line to buy EA claim rumours
EA may end up being the next big video game acquisition, although one potential deal with NBCUniversal already seems to have fallen through. In a few years’ time the video games industry will probably look very different to the way it does today, with the consolidation that began with Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda likely to end with all of today’s big name publishers either being acquired or merging with even larger companies. Together with Activision Blizzard , Electronic Arts are regarded as the biggest third party publisher in the West but they’re still minnows compared to the likes of Apple, Amazon , Disney , and NBCUniversal, all of which are supposedly interested in either acquiring or merging with EA. The sudden bidding war isn’t a result of those companies trying to follow Microsoft’s lead though, but because EA is ‘pursuing a sale’ and approaching them. If the Tories don’t return to conservatism, they’ll go the way of Scott Morrison
The defeat of the Liberal/National government in Australia is a wake-up call for the Tories, a reminder that they do not have a God-given right to rule and, if they cannot deliver for all sides of their coalition, will be on the path to defeat. In an election that was partly about character, Scott Morrison was portrayed as a “bulldozer” who had exhausted the patience of voters. But Australia is also facing a very familiar cost of living crisis, with mounting bills, stagnant wages and crazy house prices – and its politics are realigning. When working-class voters first abandoned the Australian Labor Party, the death of traditional voting patterns seemed to favour Liberal/National – but now Mr Morrison’s side of the aisle is fracturing, too. The pendulum has swung towards a progressive coalition of Labor, Greens and, crucially, ex-Liberal environmentalists in affluent urban areas, chipping away at Mr Morrison’s traditional constituencies. On the night, the Australian version of the … [Read more...] about If the Tories don’t return to conservatism, they’ll go the way of Scott Morrison
‘Party Marty’ set to be sent to Saudi Arabia after organising Downing Street lockdown gathering
A former Downing Street official at the heart of the “partygate” scandal is set to be the next British ambassador in Saudi Arabia, The Telegraph understands. Martin Reynolds, who earned the nickname “Party Marty" for his role in organising a gathering during lockdown , is believed to be the frontrunner for the role. As Boris Johnson's principal private secretary, he was responsible for running the Prime Minister’s office. He took up the role in 2019, but he left earlier this year amid a public backlash to allegations of rule-breaking parties. At the height of the first lockdown, on May 20 2020, Mr Reynolds sent an email inviting those at 10 Downing Street for a “bring your own booze” event in the garden. His email read: "Hi all. After what has been an incredibly busy period it would be nice to make the most of the lovely weather and have some socially-distanced drinks in the No 10 garden this evening. Please join us from 6pm and bring your own booze!" A Whitehall … [Read more...] about ‘Party Marty’ set to be sent to Saudi Arabia after organising Downing Street lockdown gathering
