BRITS planning a holiday abroad this year face queues as long as ten hours at the airport this summer, due to the strict new Covid rules and measures being enforced. Border Forces have warned there is "no way around delays" as they face checks on Covid tests, vaccine certificates and documents on every passenger. Experts already warned of seven-hour queues earlier this year , with passengers currently travelling being forced to wait in long lines. However, Immigration Services Union (ISU), who represent border immigration and customs staff in the UK, have said that this will only get worse when mass travel resumes. Current travel restrictions require staff to check passenger locator forms, negative Covid tests as well as proof of where each passenger is staying with contact details, taking around 15 minutes per passenger. Chinese authorities imposed strict measures on two cities in Hebei province, just south of Beijing, on Friday in order to curb a new outbreak of coronavirus. Almost 20 million people were barred from leaving the cities of Shijiazhuang and Xingtai as the country raced to take control of the largest outbreak of COVID-19 cases since the virus was first discovered in Wuhan in 2019. The Hebei province recorded 127 new cases in the past week, as well as 183 asymptomatic infections, most of which were in the two large cities. Ashok Jain (name changed) tested positive for COVID-19 on April 30. When his oxygen levels fell dangerously low, his family sent him to a small hospital in Indore, in the west-central state of Madhya Pradesh. On May 2, he called up his son-in-law and breathed his last words: "Please get me out of here, otherwise I'll die." Jain died the next day. Prajakta (name changed), a relative of Jain's, blames a lack of investment in health care as a key reason why she believes India won't be able to contain rising deaths from COVID-19 anytime soon. "India has historically underinvested in its health care system, which has ultimately led to the collapse of the system today," Prajakta told DW.
