The Jockey Club is trying to woo the animal loving “younger generation” to enjoy horse racing with a Marvel comic starring reality television “influencers”. In the Magnificent Racehorses, a specially designed comic released in time for the Grand National this weekend, some of Britain’s most iconic racehorses have been given the superhero treatment by Marvel artists. Social media influencers, including former Made in Chelsea star Georgia Toffolo and Love Island’s Chris Hughes, are set to promote the comic on Instagram and Twitter as the event’s organisers attempt to bring horse racing “into popular culture”. Featuring ten hero racehorses, the 24-page comic was designed and produced by the former editor or Marvel UK, Simon Furman, and Martin Griffiths who has been a cartoon artist for Marvel since 1986. It wasn't a bad weekend for Marvel's latest cinematic offering. Captain Marvel raked in a reported $455million at the box office, reminding fans (as though they even needed it) the legendary studio knows how to make a hit movie. You might be a fan of the silver screen offerings made by Marvel, but how well do you know the Universe's characters? We've had to try and simplify today's quiz, given there are so many earths and continuities in the ever-expanding comic book realm that no one can be realistically expected to know everything. We're not going to ask if you know what happened in volume two of the Marvel Mangaverse graphic novel. Marvel has only recently started to bring women to the forefront of its highly successful cinematic universe. With Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow previously carrying the weight of female superhero representation firmly on her shoulders, now she is joined by the female leads of Guardians of the Galaxy (Gamora, Nebula, Mantis), the brilliantly well-rounded women of Black Panther (Nakia, Okoye, Shuri), and, of course, Scarlet Witch on the Avengers team itself. Royal Mail have revealed the first images of their new set of stamps to celebrate Marvel comics. The special set of superhero postage marks will feature some of the most popular characters from the comic books with 10 picturing Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Peggy Carter, Black Panther, Captain Britain and Union Jack. The range is being released to coincide with Marvel's 80th anniversary this year. The stamps were designed by comic book artist Alan Davis who has spent more than 30 years working with Marvel and has illustrated Captain Britain, the first Marvel superhero created for the UK. It will also feature a further five stamps which are part of an exclusive short comic strip story, entitled Avengers UK, which is contained in a miniature sheet and also illustrated by David.
