Energy price cap to be reset every three months amid market chaos

May 16, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Household gas and electricity bills will be reset more frequently under plans by the energy regulator to help customers amid the cost-of-living crisis. Ofgem says setting the energy price cap every three months rather than twice a year will help suppliers to manage their costs and help households benefit more quickly from any falling prices. Around 30 household suppliers have collapsed since last August , faced with rising wholesale gas costs that they were unable to immediately pass on to consumers due to the price cap. The latest reset on April 1 led to a 54pc increase pushing average annual energy bills to £1,971 - a key driver of Britain's tightening cost-of-living squeeze . Jonathan Brearley, chief executive of Ofgem, said: “Today’s proposed change would mean the price cap is more reflective of current market prices and any price falls would be delivered more quickly to consumers. "It would also help energy suppliers better predict how much energy they need to … [Read more...] about Energy price cap to be reset every three months amid market chaos

Bristol Bears coach confronted over ‘Wagatha Christie’ criticism of Pat Lam

May 11, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Bristol Bears defence coach Omar Mouneimne was confronted by the club’s senior players as the prime suspect of a Twitter ‘burner’ account criticising director of rugby Pat Lam, Telegraph Sport understands. Bristol, who are languishing in tenth place after a disappointing season on the field, have become embroiled in their very own “Wagatha Christie” scandal off it, regarding online comments by a now deleted account. Mouneimne has strenuously denied any involvement and remains in position at the Premiership club. It was the players, including second row Dave Attwood, who first raised the alarm after an account called “GrindRugby” posted a number of comments that seemed to suggest internal knowledge of Bristol’s training methods. Responding to posts critical of Bristol’s defence, which has conceded the third most points and tries this campaign, GrindRugby responded: “Take a look at the defensive stats for last season-top of the league! Pat wants 5 mins of d training a week to focus … [Read more...] about Bristol Bears coach confronted over ‘Wagatha Christie’ criticism of Pat Lam

Exeter Chiefs edge nine-try Premier 15s thriller to keep double dream alive

May 14, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Exeter Chiefs 29 - 26 Bristol Bears Exeter Chiefs took a giant leap in their quest to secure an unprecedented league and cup double after edging a resilient Bristol Bears outfit to secure a home Premier 15s semi-final. Buoyed by a 2,657-strong superhero-themed crowd – a marketing ploy that roped in a record attendance for a women’s club game here – the home side brought their own magic capes for the high-octane encounter and nine-try thriller. In a week when it was announced that the United States would host the 2031 and 2033 World Cups, it was fitting that four of the five tries were crafted through their American players, with Jennine Detiveaux and Kate Zackary crossing twice in a topsy-turvy contest. “I thought we were jittery today,” said Susie Appleby, the Exeter head coach. “Our decision making wasn’t great. But Bristol Bears are a brilliant side and we have to give them absolute respect. I hope we get a good game next Sunday.” Detiveaux opened the scoring after flying … [Read more...] about Exeter Chiefs edge nine-try Premier 15s thriller to keep double dream alive

A closer look at Amir Khan as one of Britain’s most entertaining boxers retires

May 13, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Amir Khan hangs up his gloves safe in the knowledge he is one of the best boxers the UK has produced, bringing excitement and drama to the global stage and inspiring countless British Asians along the way. Khan won Olympic silver as a teenager, was world champion at 22 and unified the light-welterweight division before his 25th birthday as his lightning reflexes and blurring hand speed overwhelmed many formidable opponents. He might have achieved more – it seems peculiar his talents did not transcend to winning world titles in more than one division – but a suspect chin and a waning enthusiasm meant he spent the last decade of his career in purgatory. Yet the legacy he leaves is more than the belts won or the millions banked, having been one of the few fighters from these isles to truly ‘crack’ the United States. At his zenith he split opinion like few others but he juggled boxing with several philanthropic endeavours and did not shirk speaking about difficult … [Read more...] about A closer look at Amir Khan as one of Britain’s most entertaining boxers retires

Shoppers, guard among 10 dead in Buffalo supermarket attack

May 15, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Shoppers out on a weekend afternoon and a retired police officer working as a security guard were among the 10 shot and killed at a Buffalo supermarket by a white teenager who authorities say was motivated by racial hatred. Police said Payton Gendron shot, in total, 11 Black people and two white people Saturday in a rampage at the Tops Friendly Market that the 18-year-old broadcast live before surrendering to authorities. Among the dead was security guard Aaron Salter — a retired Buffalo police officer — who fired multiple shots at Gendron, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said Saturday. A bullet hit the gunman's armor, but had no effect. Gendron then killed Salter, before hunting more victims. Also killed was Ruth Whitfield, 86, the mother of retired Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield who told the Buffalo News that his “mother was a mother to the motherless.” “She was a blessing to us all,” he added. Buffalo shooting suspect’s prior threat sent him to mental hospital

May 16, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

The White gunman accused of committing a racist massacre at a Buffalo supermarket made threating comments that brought police to his high school last spring but he was never charged with a crime and had no further contact with law enforcement after his release from a hospital, officials said. The revelation raised questions about whether his encounter with police and the mental health system was yet another missed opportunity to put a potential mass shooter under closer law enforcement scrutiny, get him help, or make sure he didn't have access to deadly firearms. Authorities said Sunday that they were investigating the attack on predominantly Black shoppers and workers at the Tops Friendly Market as a potential federal hate crime or act of domestic terrorism. Payton Gendron, 18, traveled about 200 miles from his home in Conklin, New York, to Buffalo to commit the attack, police said. Federal authorities were still working to confirm the authenticity of a racist 180-page … [Read more...] about Buffalo shooting suspect’s prior threat sent him to mental hospital
