I t was never the most picturesque place – a grimy industrial port, dominated by a Soviet steelworks known as one of Europe’s worst pollution blackspots. But while the Ukrainian city of Mariupol was unlikely to grace a tourist brochure, no shortage of people proved willing to die for the right to call it their own. Today, the once-obscure port on the Azov Sea is destined for a place in history books, as the scene of some of the fiercest urban combat the 21st century has seen – and a reminder of the kind of warfare Europe hoped to have turned the page on. On Tuesday, following a siege lasting 82 days, Russia finally claimed the “surrender” of the city, after more than 200 Ukrainian fighters holed up in the city’s Azovstal steel plant handed themselves into Kremlin custody. The fighters, some badly wounded, did so as part of a deal between Moscow and Kyiv which will see them returned home in exchange for Russian PoWs. For the Kremlin, the end of Mariupol’s remaining pocket of … [Read more...] about Descent into hell: The fall of Mariupol

TM Lewin collapses into administration for the second time with all jobs at risk
Shirtmaker TM Lewin has entered administration for the second time in less than two years. The 124-year-old brand has appointed insolvency specialists at Interpath Advisory, putting 50 jobs at risk. The menswear company, famous for its office clothes, has operated online-only since 2020, after taking a financial hit at the start of the pandemic. The administration in June that year resulted in the closure of all 150 high street stores . It was rescued by Torque Brands which is part of a US-based private equity giant called Stonebridge, and currently employs about 50 staff, whose jobs are now at risk. Will Wright and Chris Pole of Interpath Advisory, the joint administrators, said that since the buyout the business had “continued to be negatively impacted” by pandemic restrictions on large events and social gatherings which had reduced demand for its shirts. Wright said: “Over the course of the pandemic, men’s apparel – and formalwear in particular – has been one of the … [Read more...] about TM Lewin collapses into administration for the second time with all jobs at risk
Stimulus talks in Congress remain hopelessly deadlocked
In a split-screen scenario Thursday that featured House Speaker Nancy Pelosi talking to reporters on one side of the Capitol while Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell descended to the floor on the other, the two lawmakers traded some of the most politically-charged rhetoric to date about their coronavirus relief proposals. The partisan barbs amplified just how divided Washington's leaders are over how—or even if—they should further assist the American people in recovering from the pandemic's toll on the economy. If ever, it appears the earliest that federal aid from Congress could come will be sometime in September, given lawmakers' recess and the lack of negotiating. The Senate adjourned Thursday afternoon until September 8 but could return early if a deal is reached. The House has been out since the end of July and will return September 14, minus a deal. As of Thursday, there were no future scheduled conversations or meetings between congressional leaders and Trump officials. … [Read more...] about Stimulus talks in Congress remain hopelessly deadlocked
From whale sharks to sea turtles: protecting Qatar’s sea life
How is Qatar helping to conserve some of nature’s most endangered sea creatures? Qatar 365 took to the ocean to find out more about the country’s projects that include protecting nesting sea turtles, stopping boats from harming whale sharks and restoring the food source of dugongs. Restoring dugongs’ food source Qatar is home to the world's second largest population of dugongs, or sea cows. The sea mammal is at a very high risk of extinction. But a unique project in Qatar is focusing on increasing their food source in an attempt to stop them from disappearing from our oceans. Evidence of the marine mammals dates back millions of years - now they face serious risks as they come up for air; from speedboats or fishing nets. In the last 50 years their numbers have dropped by around 25 percent. “We hope these dugongs can be seen by our son, by our grandson and great grandson. How to do that? You need to protect them now,” said Dr Mehsin Al Yafei, a marine scientist. … [Read more...] about From whale sharks to sea turtles: protecting Qatar’s sea life
