Dua Lipa has called being named an honorary ambassador of Kosovo ‘a privilege’. The British singer was born in London to Kosovo Albanian parents, with her family moving back to the country’s capital Pristina in 2008, shortly after Kosovo declared independence. The 26-year-old, who casually modelled alongside Kim Kardashian and Nicole Kidman at Paris Couture Week in July , was invited to receive the special honorary ambassador medal and certificate by President Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu on Friday, in a reception alongside her family. Dua, who was in Kosovo for Sunny Hill Festival, an annual event organised alongside her father, Dukagjin Lipa, posted photos on her social media as she reflected on the ‘honour’ of her new role. ‘It’s an honour and a privilege to be able to represent my country all over the world and to continue my work and efforts globally to see that we leave our mark and make a difference. ‘The youth of Kosovo deserves the right to visa liberalisation, … [Read more...] about Dua Lipa named honorary ambassador of Kosovo by country’s president

Theresa May Mark II could well be the most successful period of her premiership
A deal with the Democratic Unionist Party will mean Theresa May has a stay of execution at Number 10. Can we expect her to perform any better than she has done in her first 11 months, which is already being compared to Anthony Eden’s disastrous leadership from 1955-1957 which crashed in flames after his mishandling of the Suez crisis? Prime Ministers usually come to power ill-prepared for what lies ahead and without the willingness to learn. Theresa May was no exception. She appointed two tenacious Chiefs of Staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill , who had worked alongside her with ferocious loyalty at the Home Office. She thought that she could employ the same style in the vastly different world of Number 10. But the job of Prime Minister is one of persuasion, not command and control. Timothy and Hill crafted a meritocratic agenda for her which had much sense: but it never gained traction across Whitehall. Both individuals have become scapegoats for the election defeat and … [Read more...] about Theresa May Mark II could well be the most successful period of her premiership
I took my parents to their first Pride – it made me feel invincible
As the Dykes on Bikes rumbled past, my mum and dad – sporting ‘Proud LGBTQ Parents’ T-shirts – were whooping, clapping and enthusiastically waving their flags. When I looked over and saw this all unfolding, I felt a unique sense of euphoria. If you had told me when I was 18 that I would take my parents to a Pride parade as an out and proud lesbian and they would wave their rainbow flags with the best of them, I never would have believed you. That, however, is exactly what happened on 2 July when myself, my parents, girlfriend and best friend went to Pride in London , an event that marked 50 years since the first pride parade in 1972. I knew I was gay from a very young age, but because of a lack of representation, I did not have the language or knowledge to understand my feelings. I was incredibly drawn to Aurora from Sleeping Beauty and – at the time – I just thought she was my very favourite Disney princess. Since my celebrity crushes today are Cara Delevingne, … [Read more...] about I took my parents to their first Pride – it made me feel invincible

Badgers? Spare your tears, Chris Packham
In The Wind in the Willows, Badger is depicted as a bachelor, preferring his own company – but that wasn’t the only thing that Kenneth Grahame got wrong. A real badger’s response to a mole who had fallen over his doorscraper would not be to welcome him inside his den: he’d eat him. I thought of this when reading Chris Packham’s lyrical tweets this week on finding a dead badger in a local lane. This wasn’t a random badger, but one Packham had been observing nightly, and for whom he had developed a strong affection, nicknaming her “Golden Sow” from her pelt colour. “I met this beautiful badger in the lockdown spring. I went to see her every night and slowly won her trust. Last night I found her... She was still warm. It’s a 30mph limit and a straight road,” he wrote. “I don’t understand why they just left her in the middle of the road. What is wrong with people?” Unable to leave her there, he had sat with her in his car before taking her home and lying her out beneath a tree. His … [Read more...] about Badgers? Angry Dutch farmers vow to cause more protest chaos than ever
Dutch farmers have vowed to cause chaos in the country with their “hardest demonstrations ever” after talks over government climate change targets ended in deadlock. The Dutch government sparked fury with its proposals to curb livestock numbers by a third in order to slash nitrogen emissions . In recent months, the country has been brought to its knees, with farmers blocking roads, airports, supermarket distribution centres , as well as manure sprayed at police officers and hay bales torched in dirty protests. The mass disruption led the Dutch government to appoint a mediator in the hope of brokering a pact with the farmers to curb future protests. But the militant Farmers Defence Force, which represents eight agricultural organisations, some 95 per cent of the industry, was locked out of the first round of negotiations earlier this week with Prime Minister Mark Rutte. 'You can prepare for the toughest demonstrations ever' Following the talks on Friday, the group said … [Read more...] about Angry Dutch farmers vow to cause more protest chaos than ever
History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
Climate change was born as a modern political issue in the United States Senate. On a hot June day in 1988, a senior NASA scientist warned a Senate committee that global warming, which was previously mooted only as a hypothesis, was not only real but was already underway. “It is time to stop waffling so much and say that the evidence is pretty strong that the greenhouse effect is here,” James Hansen said. An auspicious start, and an ironic one. Since then, the fight against climate change in the United States and abroad has been defined by one constant: You can’t get the Senate to do anything. For 34 years, the upper chamber’s peculiar failure to act on the issue has shaped nearly every facet of policy and politics. Because the Senate could not pass a comprehensive climate bill, Congress could not; because Congress could not pass a climate bill, climate-concerned presidents had to rely on executive action and the permissiveness of the Supreme Court, and climate activists had to … [Read more...] about History’s Greatest Obstacle to Climate Progress Has Finally Fallen
