August 10, 2022 by metro.co.uk

More than 800 hunters are expected to compete for four-figure bounties for capturing one of the largest snake species in the world. The Florida Python Challenge, held from August 5 to 14, invites hunters to remove invasive Burmese pythons, which can grow up to 20 feet in length, from public state land. Florida is offering cash prizes for the snakes that range up to $2,500. Additional prizes will be given out to the hunters that bring in the longest pythons. Hunters that kill the snakes inhumanely, or kill non-invasive species will be disqualified. Pythons have established themselves across South Florida in Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Collier Counties – primarily within the Everglades wetlands. They are legal to hunt on private property year round, but the Python Challenge opens over 1.5million acres of public land to would-be snake hunters. According to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission (FWC), pythons prey on local endangered species, such as the Key Largo … [Read more...] about Hundreds of hunters compete to remove Florida’s invasive snakes for cash

Aboyne – from heat records to snow in a week

April 3, 2012 by www.bbc.co.uk

By James Cook Published 3 April 2012 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Seven days ago Aboyne was warmer than Barcelona, Nice and Faro. Today the first signs of Spring have been smothered by snow more than six inches deep. Daffodils and tulips are buried beneath a blanket of white, there are no sunbathers in the park and, in the fields, the lambs are huddling against their mothers for warmth and comfort. It's hard to believe that a week ago the temperature here was 23.6C, a record for Scotland in March. Last week, David Salway who has lived in Aboyne for six years, was "enjoying the sunshine, having a glass of beer in the garden and reading the paper". It's all change today. "I looked out this morning and the garden chairs and the umbrella which we put out to enjoy last week are absolutely covered in snow. It's just incredible." The people of … [Read more...] about Aboyne – from heat records to snow in a week
