The first inquiry always comes about now, as autumn gives way to winter. “So,” the questioner asks, wet-lipped with anticipation, “what are you going to be having on the big day?” The implication is obvious. I am employed to travel the country passing judgment on restaurants both grand and less so. I look down my nose at the offerings of MasterChef contestants and then deliver a crushing verdict. Surely, therefore, Christmas lunch in my house must be magnificent; the platonic ideal of Christmas lunches to which all others must aspire, a parade of poise and ooh and ah. I don’t blame anyone for thinking like this, because it’s what I think too. Mine really should be magnificent. It’s no accident that I’ve been a restaurant critic for two decades. I brood about what I’ll be having for dinner while eating breakfast, and daydream perfect lunch menus designed to make my guests swoon, even when I haven’t invited any. So, of course, I … [Read more...] about What does a food critic cook for Christmas?
The father of two boys who died next to each other having taken a drug overdose is calling for MDMA to be legalised. In November 2014 Jacques and Torin Lakeman met up to see Manchester United play at Old Trafford as a treat ahead of their first Christmas apart. Two days later they were found dead above a pub in Bolton, the Manchester Evening News reported. The brothers had taken a lethal overdose of MDMA which Torin, 19, had bought from a dealer on the 'dark web'. As the tragedy began to sink in their dad Ray started researching drug usage and dealing, leading him to a surprising conclusion. He believes that drugs should be legalised. “If I thought banning drugs works I would support it, of course,” Ray says. “I wish it would stop people but it won’t and if we want to save lives and if the authorities were genuinely interested in saving lives I suggest they change their policies. "The current policies won’t stop people from dying.” Before they … [Read more...] about Dad pushes for drugs to be legalised after sons on MDMA die side-by-side
“We are the controllers of the funfair, of the rabbit hole ... of the dreams,” cries an eccentrically costumed showman as a three-dimensional kaleidoscope whirls into life. The ride is one of the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-themed theatrical “experiences” designed to inject some pizzazz into the opening of Westgate Oxford, the £440m shopping centre that has replaced the city’s rundown 1970s scheme. The spinning wall of coloured mirrors has a dizzying effect; when the ride ends, you stumble out blinking like a modern-day Alice. It’s not Wonderland – the huge John Lewis in front of you confirms that. Rather, you have entered the realm of “shoppertainment”, a brave new world where retailers aren’t just in the business of trying to sell stuff – they are also in showbusiness. The more than 300 staff at Westgate’s John Lewis have been put through their paces by the Oxford Playhouse theatre. The acting … [Read more...] about ‘Shoppertainment’: How department stores are becoming ‘theatres of dreams’
