The 31-year-old former world number one announced she had had a “small procedure” on her right shoulder on Instagram. “As many of you know, I have struggled with shoulder pain since last summer,” Sharapova said. “For 10 weeks post US Open, I focused on getting my rotator cuff and scapula strong to support a surgically repaired fraying tendon and a small labrum tear. “Although my shoulder got strong, it didn’t help the pain on impact. Caroline Wozniacki's reign as Australian Open champion ended with a three-set defeat by Maria Sharapova in the third round. The battle of two of the biggest names in the game did not disappoint but in the end Sharapova's fierce hitting won the day as she surged to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory on Rod Laver Arena. The Russian said: "I thought the level was quite high. I knew I was going to get a really tough match. I haven't played a lot of matches in the last year, especially against top players. Former world number one Maria Sharapova’s Australian Open preparations suffered a blow after a thigh injury forced her to retire from the Shenzhen Open quarter-final clash against Aryna Sabalenka yesterday. Sharapova struggled to move on court and conceded the opening set 6-1. Coach Thomas Hogstedt then urged the Russian to either take her game to the next level or call for a medical timeout. "If you feel more like you did on the first point, then you just stop. Or you take a medical now," he said. "But the shots are there ... you have to get it up to another gear." After receiving treatment off-court between sets, Sharapova sprinted out of the blocks to record a service hold. She then pushed Sabalenka in the next game, creating three break point opportunities. Sabalenka, however, turned things around again to move 4-2 ahead before her Russian opponent found herself unable to continue and retired from the match.
