EVERYBODY needs good Neighbours, according to its famous theme tune – but that no longer appears to be the case. Channel 5 has confirmed it will take the beloved Aussie soap off air from August after 36 years on our screens. Producers Fremantle Australia and the broadcaster failed to strike a deal, with one source saying the show costs too much to film compared to what it brings in through advertising revenue. Now Neighbours will need to find a new home in the UK, otherwise it could go to the TV heaven in the sky. Thousands of fans have signed a petition threatening to boycott Channel 5 unless it reinstates the soap. But it’s not just viewers who will be hit, as Ramsay Street has served as a springboard for chart-toppers and Hollywood A-listers . Josh Saunders recalls the soap’s most memorable moments and its biggest stars. Retired doctor wrongly prescribed sex-change treatments to patients as young as nine, tribunal hears
A retired gastroenterologist wrongly prescribed sex-change treatments to seven transgender patients, one of which was just nine years old, a tribunal has heard. Dr Michael Webberley provided puberty blockers and hormones via GenderGP, an online gender clinic which he ran with his wife and fellow GP, Dr Helen Webberley. A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) panel found him guilty of various charges after he was accused of failing to provide good clinical care to seven patients between February 2017 and June 2019. In a number of cases, he had attended to patients after restrictions had been placed on his wife’s practice. But several doctors raised concerns about his treatment with the General Medical Council (GMC) and he was later suspended. With all seven patients, he was found guilty of providing or allowing treatment that was “not clinically indicated” or had been prescribed without adequate tests, examinations or assessments. More new mothers over 40 than under 20 in Wales for first time
Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing The number of women giving birth aged over 40 has overtaken the number under 20 years of age for the first time. The change is part of a general rise in maternal age, with more births also among 35-39 year olds than 20-24 year olds for the first time. A third of births in 2021 were to women aged 30 to 34, the largest category, figures from the Welsh government show. A health expert said policies would need to be put in place if governments wanted people to have children earlier. Since the turn of the millennium, there has been a steady downwards trend in births among younger women. In 2001, just over 10% of births in Wales were to those aged 19 and under. This number has fallen every year since 2004, with last year's figures showing just 2.8% of births were to teenagers. However, it is still the case … [Read more...] about More new mothers over 40 than under 20 in Wales for first time
Skellig Michael: ‘I like the solitude and peace of the island’
By Colm Kelpie Published 1 day ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing For the last 34 years, Pat O'Shea has looked after a rocky island that once housed a monastic settlement, was attacked by Vikings, and is beloved by Star Wars fans. Each Monday between April and October, he steps out of his house, looks across the rugged expanse of County Kerry and to the Atlantic Ocean beyond. He eyes the often choppy, frigid waters with an inquisitive eye, trying to judge whether the swells might hamper his weekly commute to work. At 07:00, he rings the owner of the transport boat moored alongside the village of Portmagee, to determine whether he and his small team will make it across for work on Sceilg Mhichíl, the largest of the two Skellig islands, and one of Ireland's national monuments. Pat and his colleagues at the Office of Public Works (OPW), a state agency, are the … [Read more...] about Skellig Michael: ‘I like the solitude and peace of the island’
