EVERYBODY needs good Neighbours, according to its famous theme tune – but that no longer appears to be the case. Channel 5 has confirmed it will take the beloved Aussie soap off air from August after 36 years on our screens. Producers Fremantle Australia and the broadcaster failed to strike a deal, with one source saying the show costs too much to film compared to what it brings in through advertising revenue. Now Neighbours will need to find a new home in the UK, otherwise it could go to the TV heaven in the sky. Thousands of fans have signed a petition threatening to boycott Channel 5 unless it reinstates the soap. But it’s not just viewers who will be hit, as Ramsay Street has served as a springboard for chart-toppers and Hollywood A-listers . Josh Saunders recalls the soap’s most memorable moments and its biggest stars. How to avoid HUGE Disney+ price rise with simple trick
DISNEY is hiking the price of its Disney+ streaming service in the U.S as it introduced a new subscription tier that runs ads during shows. The price increases are tied to a new tiered service Disney will launch in December for U.S. subscribers. The basic Disney+ service today costs $7.99 per month. Starting in December, that basic service will run ads, so a subscriber who wants no ads will have to upgrade to a premium service that starts at $10.99 per month, a 37 per cent rise over current prices. An annual plan will cost $109.99. It means that viewers wanting to stick to their current price plan will have to watch adverts during their favourite shows and movies. UK weather: Farmers warn of crop failure in biggest English drought in 20 years
The biggest drought in 20 years has been declared across the majority of England, as farmers said half their crops could fail, households were warned of taps running dry and supermarkets faced water shortages . An official drought has been declared in eight of 14 areas across England, encompassing most of the central and southern parts of the country. Yorkshire Water has announced its first hosepipe ban in 27 years , joining four other companies who are bringing in restrictions. Jamie Hannaford, a hydrologist at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, said it was the most widespread drought since at least 2003. “This drought is notable for how large an area it’s been affecting through the summer of 2022,” he said. “It’s more widespread than the 2018-19 and 2010-12 events and overall drought conditions are more extensive than 2004-6.” The decision to announce an official drought was made at a meeting of the National Drought Group, attended by officials, farmers, … [Read more...] about UK weather: Farmers warn of crop failure in biggest English drought in 20 years
Why the UK’s efforts to vaccinate against monkeypox are faltering
Matt and his boyfriend have spent hours on the train to London from Coventry over the past few weekends – all in the hope of getting a monkeypox vaccine. “We’d heard about a walk-in clinic at Guy’s Hospital last Saturday so we were up at 7am to get down there,” he says. But when they arrived an hour before it opened, the vaccine doses had been sent elsewhere: “There were at least 40 of us there all ready to join the queue. But they’d cancelled it at the last-minute.” Matt is trying again this weekend, with an appointment at another clinic in London. “We don’t know what’s going on, and we are all just trying to be responsible and protect ourselves,” he says, describing the situation as “super frustrating”. For weeks, social media has been flooded with stories of people eligible for the vaccine – as healthcare workers, or gay and bisexual men at higher risk – but unable to book appointments. Hard figures on the monkeypox vaccine roll-out have been scant. The UK Health & … [Read more...] about Why the UK’s efforts to vaccinate against monkeypox are faltering
Tesla’s profits knocked by China factory shutdowns as it sells Bitcoin
Tesla has fallen victim to supply chain chaos in China and a damaging bet on Bitcoin, bringing a record run of profits at Elon Musk’s car company to a sudden end. The electric vehicle maker also sold off a chunk of its Bitcoin holdings, the company said on Wednesday, as its bet on the cryptocurrency soured. Revenues at Tesla dropped by 9pc between the second and first quarter to $16.9bn (£14.1bn), though were still 42pc higher than a year earlier. Its revenues were down on the record three-month revenues of $18.8bn it posted earlier this year amid supply chain woes and a factory shut down in China due to Covid restrictions. Telsa said it “faced certain challenges, including limited production and shutdowns in Shanghai for the majority of the quarter” but claimed it “continued to make significant progress across the business during the second quarter of 2022”. Earlier this month, Tesla reported it had delivered more than 254,000 electric vehicles, down from around 300,000 in … [Read more...] about Tesla’s profits knocked by China factory shutdowns as it sells Bitcoin
How a decent man fell victim to political naivety
Adrian Noble's eventual departure from the RSC is in itself no great surprise: what is astonishing is the timing of the announcement. One assumed that Noble, having staked his reputation on the radical restructuring of the company, would wait to see how it turned out. But, with the season barely begun, Noble has indicated that he has had enough. Cynics will argue that the overwhelming success of his production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, from which he will earn a tidy sum, has given him the freedom to depart. But I don't believe that is the real reason. After several conversations with him I know how passionately he believed in the need for a radical overhaul of the RSC. If he has chosen to announce his departure, I suspect it is partly because he has realised that his plans have not exactly earned the support of the profession, the public or the media. Like Tony Blair, Noble has realised that you cannot carry on a battle on several fronts simultaneously. His plans for … [Read more...] about How a decent man fell victim to political naivety
Airline’s solution to a summer of holiday chaos? Give its staff an extra four days off
Jet2 has given staff an extra four days of annual leave this year for the sake of the their mental wellbeing after a summer of holiday chaos. Thousands of Britons have had much-awaited trips abroad scuppered by mass flight delays and cancellations. Jet2 – which has been hit by the disruption – said the extra days off could be taken at any time this year and was a show of appreciation for staff working during the ‘challenging’ period. But the move is likely to raise eyebrows from passengers who have had their own holiday hopes dashed. It comes after Jet2 was slammed by pilots’ union Balpa in July for allegedly refusing to recognise concerns about ‘fatigue and stress caused by roster disruption’ that could increase the risk of accidents. By Becky Morton Published 2 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Labour has called for an extension of the tax on oil and gas companies to fund a freeze in the energy price cap. The cap - the maximum amount suppliers can charge for average use - is forecast to hit £3,582 in October and £4,266 in January. Leader Sir Keir Starmer said Labour's plans would save the typical family £1,000. The government said it had pledged £37bn of support to help people through the winter.
