Even Ukraine’s badly wounded warriors want to get back in the fight

August 12, 2022 by www.cbsnews.com

As Russia's war in Ukraine grinds on after more than five months of vicious fighting, casualties are mounting on both sides. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have suffered life-changing injuries, but many tell CBS News they're determined to continue defending their country if they can. CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams visited a rehabilitation center in western Ukraine trying to help some of the warriors recover. The men she met said they wanted America's help to heal, so they can get back on the battlefield. Many lost limbs fighting off Russia's invasion. Now they're rebuilding their bodies and their minds. "It was a big pain, but also it was a big shock," Captain Danylo Ishchenko told CBS news. He said he lost his leg to a Russian mortar during intense fighting last month around Ukraine's second largest city, Kharkiv. "I am a warrior, and it's not very important — warrior with iron leg or natural leg," he told Williams. "I will fight." He's already … [Read more...] about Even Ukraine’s badly wounded warriors want to get back in the fight

Ukraine war: Wheat export ships leave ports, Kyiv in POWs appeal, EU mulls Russia visa ban

August 12, 2022 by www.euronews.com

1. First wheat export under UN deal as two more ships leave Ukraine Two more ships left Ukraine's Black Sea ports on Friday, including one laden with the first Ukrainian wheat to be exported under a UN-brokered deal, Turkey's defence ministry said. A total 14 ships have now departed from Ukraine over the past two weeks, following the deal with Russia to allow a resumption of grain exports from Ukraine's Black Sea ports, after they were stalled for five months due to the war. The Belize-flagged Sormovsky left Ukraine's Chornomorsk port on Friday, the Turkish ministry said, carrying 3,050 tonnes of wheat to Turkey's northwestern Tekirdag province. It was the first shipment of wheat from Ukraine, which, along with Russia, accounted for nearly a third of global wheat exports before February 24, when Moscow launched its full invasion of its neighbour. Ukraine has some 20 million tonnes of grain left over from last year's crop, while this year's wheat harvest is also … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Wheat export ships leave ports, Kyiv in POWs appeal, EU mulls Russia visa ban

Ukraine war: Crimea blasts significantly hit Russian navy – UK

August 12, 2022 by www.bbc.co.uk

By George Wright Published 3 hours ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Related Topics Russia-Ukraine war Blasts at a Russian-operated airfield in Crimea this week have "significantly degraded" its navy's Black Sea fleet, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) says. The Saky base in the west of Russian-ruled Crimea was rocked by a string of blasts on Tuesday, killing one person. The blasts led to the loss of eight Russian combat jets, the MoD said in its daily intelligence update. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility, but satellite images suggest the possibility of a targeted attack. The cause of the blasts is unclear, but at least five fighter-bombers and three multi-role jets were "almost certainly destroyed or seriously damaged", the statement says. The loss of eight combat jets will make only a minor dent in Moscow's overall fleet of aircraft, … [Read more...] about Ukraine war: Crimea blasts significantly hit Russian navy – UK

Alexey Alchin: Bulgaria risks violating EU principles over Russia extradition request

August 12, 2022 by www.euronews.com

When he moved to Bulgaria in 2014, all Alexey Alchin wanted to do is open a dojo where he could teach his favourite martial arts to children. After publicly burning his Russian passport in Varna in late February in protest over Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Alchin found himself in detention amidst extradition demands from his home country. His case threatens to set a dangerous precedent that would see opponents to President Vladimir Putin's regime being extradited from the European Union. The Balkan country of almost seven million people would be the first EU member state to hand over a Russian national since the beginning of the invasion, despite legal and human rights experts warning that Moscow is using trumped-up charges against Alchin as a way of testing the bloc's resolve in protecting Kremlin critics abroad. After Alchin's act of defiance in Varna, it took the authorities in Moscow mere months to set up a case against him and reach out to Sofia, … [Read more...] about Alexey Alchin: Bulgaria risks violating EU principles over Russia extradition request

Retreat from Kherson or be ‘annihilated’, Ukraine warns Russia

July 27, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Russian troops will be “annihilated” unless they retreat from the southern city of Kherson, Ukraine warned on Wednesday after it struck a key bridge with US-supplied rockets . Kyiv’s strafing of the Antonovsky bridge with precise, long-range Himars rocket launchers marks the opening salvo in Ukraine’s counter-offensive to retake the strategic city, likely to be the site of the next big battle as fighting in the Donbas slows. The 1000-metre-long bridge, which Russian forces rely on to resupply the occupied city, has been left “completely unusable”, according to a Western official. That will make it much harder for Moscow to move heavy armour into Kherson - or take its troops out in personnel carriers. “Ukraine’s Kherson counteroffensive is now gathering pace,” the official added. “As with so many wars, one central part of the campaign is boiling down to a race to seize and destroy bridges.” The Ukrainian Defence Ministry warned “Russian occupiers in … [Read more...] about Retreat from Kherson or be ‘annihilated’, Ukraine warns Russia

Battle for Kherson will test Ukraine’s infantry and artillery – but it won’t end the war

July 27, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

An army is trapped on a riverbank, bridges blown behind them, without hope of rescue or escape. If it sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The coming battle of Kherson will in many ways be a reversal of May’s struggle for Severodonetsk, where Ukraine found itself trying to maintain an ever-dwindling bridgehead supplied by constantly shelled bridges. “The way the Ukrainians are going about that is knocking out the bridges over the Dnipro,  thereby limiting the logistical support and therefore the availability of things like artillery on the Western bank,” said Jack Watling of the Royal United Services Institute. “What we are seeing in terms of tactical actions are small opportunistic advances along multiple axes to roll the Russians into a tighter and tighter pocket along the river. “It could work. If the Russians are not able to reinforce, it could bring about a collapse of Russian will to fight in Kherson and achieve retaking the city at some point.” Four bridges are key … [Read more...] about Battle for Kherson will test Ukraine’s infantry and artillery – but it won’t end the war

How Western Himars forced Russia to negotiate on grain

July 23, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

It was certainly a remarkable scene in Istanbul on Friday in the Ottoman-era Dolmabahce Palace which overlooks the Bosphorus, the gateway to the Black Sea. Here was one of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle, the bullish Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, signing a grain export deal that lifted Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s ports – previously one of the Kremlin’s key “total war” strategies. This was a genuine concession. It could even be seen as a humiliation. And the credit must go, again, to US long-range weapons. High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as Himars, have been instrumental in forcing the Kremlin to the negotiating table these past few weeks. Whether the grain export deal actually works out remains uncertain. On Saturday, Russia fired missiles at Odesa’s port, causing a fire and drawing widespread condemnation. But the fact that Russia agreed to such a public compromise shows that the rocket systems are changing the balance of the war in Ukraine’s favour. … [Read more...] about How Western Himars forced Russia to negotiate on grain
