"Did men ever feel so helpless?" a witness poignantly asked as he rescued a heroic conductress trapped under an overturned tram in Burton almost 100 years ago. Len Brown "heard a rumble, then a bang, saw just a cloud of dust, heard one long drawn-out scream following by comparative silence" he told the Burton Mail almost 100 years ago as he relived the terrible moment tram car 19 overturned on October 8, 1919. His friend John Outram, from Woodville, said Mr Goodman told him around 40 years ago that he drove the vehicle, as he would have been able to fix anything which may have gone wrong on the journey back. Despite the severe damage to the top deck and lower saloon, the tram was driven by Mr Goodman to Swadlincote from Burton under its own power and was later repaired and eventually returned to service. Mr Outram has answered Burton Live's ongoing appeal to trace families and friends of victims of tram car … [Read more...] about Man who had job of ‘righting’ tram car following crash said it ‘had to be him’
