Coronation Street actor Peter Armitage, who played Bill Webster on the Cobbles, has died at the age of 78. Co-star Charlie Lawson, who plays Jim McDonald, shared the sad news on Twitter on Tuesday. Charlie wrote: "It’s with great sadness, that I’ve to tell you my great old friend Pete Armitage has died. RIP mate." A number of Coronation Street stars have since offered their condolences. Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald said: "I loved Pete what a lovely man very sad RIP lovely man." Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria O'Connor said: "So sorry to hear this Charlie. Pete was such a lovely man.. he’ll be sadly missed." And Jane Dawson, who stars as Leanne Battersby wrote: "So sorry to hear this , lovely man . Thoughts to family and friends x" No cause of death has been given, but the Sheffield born-actor revealed four years ago that he had beaten bowel cancer. Coronation Street actor Peter Armitage has died, four years after beating bowel cancer. Armitage, who played Kevin Webster’s dad Bill on the long running soap, was 78. Fellow Corrie star Charlie Lawson broke the news on Twitter as he paid tribute to his “great old friend”. A man who was the subject of a police manhunt for a month has been charged with murder. Steve Baxter, aged 52, was wanted by police in connection with the discovery of the body of Simon Clark at a caravan park in Pendine, Carmarthenshire, on Friday, September 28. After numerous reported sightings and tip-offs that turned out to be negative, Baxter was found and arrested at around 3.45pm on Saturday afternoon. He was located between Marros Sands and the village of Pendine - only a few miles from where Mr Clark’s body was found. A timeline of events Friday, September 28: Police are called to Grove Caravan Park in Pendine. At around 10am they discover the body of 54-year-old Simon Peter Clark inside the site. A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder later that day but was later released with no further action. Simon Armitage has spent the past year there, and Flit is his travelogue in the form of 40 poems, with photos of local landmarks. “Like any city/ with a history worth knowing”, he writes, “the capital boasts/ gunshot holes plugged with chewing gum/ at chest-height on the cathedral walls.” He’s even translated a few verses from Ysp’s finest poet, a shadowy figure called H K: "Beyond the funeral procession the hot-air balloon bears fruit. Beyond the carnival the peregrine stoops." One thing Armitage neglects to mention, of course, is that the city doesn’t exist.
