Manchester United supporters are in favour of a defensive winter cull and have lost patience with Alexis Sanchez. Ahead of the January transfer window, the MEN conducted a fan poll on the players United should keep and sell in the New Year and fans have voted for six players to be sold, with five of them defenders. Over 60 per cent of United fans have advised the club to cut their losses on Sanchez just 10 months on from his high-profile switch from Arsenal. Sanchez, who turns 30 in December, has scored just four United goals and started one of the last six Premier League matches amid Anthony Martial's upturn in form. United supporters have also despaired at the defensive alternatives available to manager Jose Mourinho, who was adamant the club needed a new centre half in the summer. A whopping 92.5 per cent voted to sell Matteo Darmian, whose sole appearance this term was in the league opener on August 10, while over 80 per cent want rid of Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones. Manchester United are a club in crisis and Jose Mourinho is seemingly powerless to prevent a slide into mid-table mediocrity for the 20-time English champions. The Old Trafford hierarchy preened this week after the latest financial results showed the club had earned revenue of more than half a billion pounds for the third year running. But United, who finished a distant second behind Manchester City last season, are going backwards on the pitch -- licking their wounds after their worst start to a league campaign for 29 years. Mourinho's men travelled to the London Stadium on Saturday boasting an enviable record against West Ham but came away chastened after a 3-1 defeat killed off any realistic hopes of a Premier League challenge before the end of September. Languishing nine points behind leaders City, they now face a battle even to qualify for the lucrative Champions League, a prospect that will give the money men sleepless nights. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand … [Read more...] about Are Man United and Mourinho nearing end of the road?
This was class. Not from Manchester United but from Brighton who inflicted a deserved defeat on Jose Mourinho’s woeful side. The United manager had complained about Manchester City’s lack of “class” after he was mocked in the Amazon Prime “All or Nothing” documentary series about the champions but it is his team that is lacking. They are joyless. Mourinho has also complained about United’s failure to sign a central defender during the summer transfer window but the two he brought in – Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, at a combined cost of £61million – played and were shocking. Alexis Sanchez did not travel after suffering a “little problem” in training on Friday, according to Mourinho, but there are big, big problems with United on this showing as they were out-competed, out-fought all over the pitch. Sanchez’s replacement Anthony Martial – who wants to leave the club – was peripheral as was … [Read more...] about Jose Mourinho unable to inspire joyless Manchester United as Brighton expose their defensive frailties
