As I left my small, remote hometown of Joseph, Oregon, driving two hours to the nearest airport to fly south, I thought about my father, a Caddo/Delaware Native American man who spent most of his life in the Bay Area. Dad arrived in California as a child due to the assimilation policies enacted by the US government in the 1950s, which forcefully relocated Native Americans from their land into urban areas to become “productive” members of society. It also intentionally placed Indian orphans into the homes of white families. Today, 78% of Native Americans live off-reservation, and 72% live in urban or suburban environments. Those policies had devastating effects. Relocated tribal members became isolated from their communities. Low paying jobs and higher expenses, combined with the inability to return to reservations which had often been dissolved, left many in precarious circumstances. In the case of my dad, this translated to growing up on the rough streets of Richmond, CA, … [Read more...] about Most Native Americans live in cities, not reservations. Here are their stories

MANCHESTER CITY are furious with Arsenal following the collapse of the Alexis Sanchez deal late last night. The Gunners opted to keep Sanchez after failing in their own last-minute attempts to sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco. Lemar showed Arsenal supporters what they were missing by scoring his first two goals for France in their 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over Holland – the first of which was a sublime volley. Arsenal made an 11th-hour effort to sign the 21-year-old in a club-record deal, reportedly worth £92million, but did not have time to get the transfer over the line. It is believed Lemar actually favoured a move to Liverpool as they could offer him Champions League football. That meant Chilean forward Sanchez was prevented from joining City as Arsenal were only prepared to let him leave if they recruited a big-name replacement. City had reportedly tabled a bid worth up to £60m but Sanchez will now remain at Arsenal with his contract expiring at the end of the … [Read more...] about Manchester City furious with ‘shambolic’ Arsenal after Alexis Sanchez deal collapses late on

Dylan first heard Levon and the Hawks – the band who would become The Band – in 1965, at a club on Yonge Street in Toronto called Friar’s Tavern. Yonge Street in those days was hip. An offshoot of the Yorkville neighbourhood – whose many music clubs helped give rise to Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and the Toronto Sound – Yonge was replete with bars, clothing stores, venues and vice. It was, as Robbie Robertson put it, “the centre of Toronto’s nightlife and entertainment”. According to Richard Pritchard, co-owner of the clothing boutique Cat’s Cradle, which has overlooked the street since 1972, Yonge Street was more or less ground zero for Toronto’s cultural scene. “Whether you lived nearby or not, you would come to this area and spend a day,” he says. Few would talk about Yonge Street that way now. Friar’s is gone, along with most of the other live music venues, and the city has cracked down on the … [Read more...] about Retail revolution: should cities ban chain stores?
Kyle Walker will undergo a medical at Manchester City on Friday before completing his deal to become the most expensive English player of all time. Walker travelled up to Manchester on Thursday after City and Tottenham Hotspur finally agreed a fee for him of £50million, with potential add-ons that could see the fee rise to £53m. That brought to an end months of negotiations between the two clubs with Tottenham pleased that City have paid what they see as the going rate for an England international right-back. City and Spurs have been haggling since the end of the season, with City initially hoping to pay £35m for the player Pep Guardiola had identified as the solution to their right-back problem. But Daniel Levy was insistent that City should play at least as much as the £48.5m they spent on John Stones and far more than the £35m they spent on Ederson. Tottenham believed that the £30m fees for Michael Keane and Jordan Pickford should be taken as context … [Read more...] about Manchester City closing on Kyle Walker after meeting Tottenham’s asking price

Noam Chomsky has warned the US Republican party is now “the most dangerous organisation in world history” because of the denial of climate change by President-elect Donald Trump and other leading figures. Following the US elections, Professor Chomsky said it appeared humans planned to answer what he called “the most important question in their history … by accelerating the race to disaster”. Mr Trump has already appointed a prominent climate change denier to run his transition team covering the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other advisers include people with close links to the fossil fuel industry. He has also pledged to scrap the United States’ ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change, which President Barack Obama has hailed as “the moment that we finally decided to save our planet”. Leading climate scientists have expressed dismay and concern about Mr Trump’s election, suggesting it could be an … [Read more...] about Noam Chomsky: Donald Trump’s election will accelerate global warming and humanity’s ‘race to disaster’
Leicester City are in a rut, and at the moment it is difficult to see how they are going to get themselves out of it. City have lost their last three league games and now sit just two points above the relegation zone. They didn't score a single league goal in January and haven't kept a clean sheet since the goalless stalemate at Middlesbrough on January 2, which is their only Premier League clean sheet since the goalless draw with Southampton at the King Power Stadium on October 2. Tally in the startling fact that City are without an away league win this season and it paints a picture of a side in desperate trouble. It certainly isn't the statistics of reigning Premier League champions. When City won the title the biggest question was how was it possible that a team made up of the same group of players that had been bottom of the table for over 140 days the previous campaign could go on and win the title by ten clear points? Now the question is how can the same squad, give or take a … [Read more...] about Leicester City: What has gone wrong this season?
