The England forward Toni Duggan will face a familiar foe when she pulls on the red and white of Atlético Madrid in Manchester on Wednesday night. The 28-year-old was a key part of the Manchester City project, spending four years at the club and helping them to a first League Cup win, a first Women’s Super League title and another League Cup in 2016, and a first FA Cup in 2017. Now, she will face her former club for the first time, competitively, since departing for Spain, in the tastiest fixture of the Champions League last 16. The unseeded Arsenal, who are England’s other team in the tournament and who could have faced the holders Lyon, were handed the kinder tie against Slavia Prague. It has been a tough year for Duggan, who joined Barcelona alongside the star of the Netherlands’ Euro 2017 campaign Lieke Martens to help usher in a new era of investment in Catalonia. She left Barça this summer after a season which the club ended empty handed, having lost a … [Read more...] about Atletico’s Toni Duggan returns to Manchester City with point to prove

If Manchester City do go on to retain the title they may look back at this game as a rather important step. The champions arrived here with their backs against the wall having lost to Wolves before the international break and with Liverpool sailing off into the distance. If that was not bad enough, Pep Guardiola was then forced to deploy a team containing no recognised centre-backs due to a combination of illness and injury. Another defeat looked possible but instead City showed their class and defiance, playing brilliantly and withstanding a late assault by Crystal Palace to cut the gap to Jürgen Klopp’s side to five points. The game was won in the first half thanks to Gabriel Jesus’s 50th goal for City and David Silva’s finish soon after. Palace, who came into this contest in decent form, tried their best to harm their opponents but the truth is they were outclassed. Guardiola is perhaps the only man in world football who could put out a team containing no … [Read more...] about Gabriel Jesus and David Silva on target as Manchester City pick off Palace
The curious thing about Wolves’ defeat of Manchester City a fortnight ago is that it could have been much more comfortable had Patrick Cutrone not seemingly had his boots on the wrong way round. It’s not gone unnoticed by Nuno Espírito Santo that the young striker, signed from Milan in the summer for £16m, is taking his time to settle at Molineux. What he needs is a familiar face in the ranks to help him feel comfortable – surely then the goals will come. Step forward Franck Kessié. The midfielder had a fine understanding with Cutrone at Milan last season and was close to joining Wolves in the summer window only for the transfer to fall through. But Milan’s dire financial situation means a move is back on again. The box-to-box Ivory Coast international would bring even more energy to Nuno’s side and a smile back to Cutrone’s face. The cost for all this positivity would be £26.9m but there is a sticking point. Milan want a … [Read more...] about Football transfer rumours: Kessié to Wolves? Håland to Manchester City?
With Manchester City lagging eight points behind Liverpool, a visit to Selhurst Park represents an awkward test as Pep Guardiola’s side seek to return to winning ways. A City team tripped up by Norwich also came unstuck against Wolves last time out and on Saturday they face a Palace side with form for making life difficult. Across the past three seasons under Guardiola, only Chelsea, Leicester and Liverpool have taken more league points off City than the four Palace have mustered. Other teams have tried and failed miserably: Arsenal have eked out a single point from the past six meetings, while West Ham and Watford remain pointless against Guardiola over the same period. Last season Palace won 3-2 at City in December, with Andros Townsend’s stunning 30-yard volley the lasting snapshot, as Guardiola’s side slipped to a first defeat of the season. Luka Milivojevic, the dependable Palace captain, scored his team’s third with a penalty and, but for a rare miss from … [Read more...] about Crystal Palace and the knack: how the Eagles became Man City’s bogey team
The Carrow Road crowd will cherish this memory for years to come. Echoes of ’93 and all that bounded across the stadium as Norwich City – newly promoted, short of money and with eight first-team players out injured - took on, outplayed and beat the celebrated champions of England. The Canaries might just have put a cat among the pigeons in the title race. Manchester City are now five points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table and given the tightest margin by which the title was decided last year – 11.7mm of ball by one account – that is not a meaningless total. On the other hand it is still September and there are many games to go but, beyond the points, Pep Guardiola will have seen enough in this match to worry him. City were not at their attacking best but their defending left a lot more to be desired. Norwich led from the 19th minute when Kenny McLean exploited a City weakness, getting across to the near post to score with a header from a … [Read more...] about Teemu Pukki strikes again to seal Norwich’s shock win over Man City
