Brentford star Romaine Sawyers is back on Stoke City's transfer watch list as Nathan Jones prepares for the known knowns and the known unknowns this summer. Jones is an admirer of Sawyers, the versatile midfielder who could slot into any role in the diamond that Stoke are expected to operate next season. But an extra midfielder isn't exactly Stoke's top priority at the moment, with Sam Clucas, Joe Allen, Peter Etebo, Ryan Woods, Giannelli Imbula and Badou Ndiaye already on the books. So Martin Spinks reports how a lot will depend on any incoming offers - invited or otherwise - before Jones, Mark Cartwright and Tony Scholes make certain moves. He writes: "Jones is a fan of the midfield all rounder and has his name on his radar, but not on speed dial just yet. "The Sentinel understands that could change, however, if a midfield vacancy becomes available - and particularly if an offer drops for Joe Allen." While we're at it, here's a list of all the players who have been linked a move … [Read more...] about Stoke City transfer contingency planning as target re-emerges

MINI MATCH REPORT It was a second successive scoreless stalemate for Stoke City as they drew 0-0 with Derby County. Stoke made one change from the goalless draw at Queens Park Rangers with Ryan Woods returning following a sending off for Sam Clucas at Loftus Road. It was a hard earned point as goalkeeper Jack Butland and Danny Batth and Co provided a solid platform for the result which makes it six unbeaten for the Potters. James McClean came closest to breaking the deadlock for the visitors when his header struck the crossbar, while Harry Wilson's free-kick rattled the woodwork for the Rams. Despite Derby pressure, Nathan Jones' men were able to keep their third clean sheet in a row. There was more injury frustration, however, with Benik Afobe departing with a hamstring injury just before half-time. Derby boss Frank Lampard singled out Butland for praise, while the latest stalemate left Potters fans a little confused as to whether they should have a glass half full or half empty … [Read more...] about Boss singles out this man as Stoke City leave some fans confused

A promising autumn, when Tony Pulis's side went on a run of four wins in seven games - including earning the scalps of Tottenham and Arsenal - was followed by a hard winter. A run of 11 matches without a win even featured a League Cup home defeat to Derby. But Pulis struck gold twice in a crucial January transfer window, bringing in Matthew Etherington and James Beattie from West Ham and Sheffield United respecitively. Both would combine to … [Read more...] about The Stoke City 10-year challenge: where are Tony Pulis’s 2009 squad now?
Stoke City are ready to move for young Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke before the transfer window closes next week, according to reports. The website Football Insider claims the 22-year-old is Nathan Jones’ top target as he seeks to reinforce his backline. In an “exclusive” report, Pete O’Rourke writes: “Clarke has played an instrumental role in Portsmouth’s success this season, helping them to the top of League One. “He has an ever-present in the Pompey defence this season and has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the Football League. “Portsmouth will be keen to keep hold of Clarke as they look to win promotion to the Championship, but Stoke are ready to test their resolve to hang onto the defender.” Stoke boss Jones is a keen exponent of the “diamond” midfield formation, but needs speedy and mobile central defenders for it to work at its best. He switched formation to field three … [Read more...] about Stoke City transfer gossip: Potters poised to swoop for League One defender
