Picture: AFP Washington. ennessee on Thursday electrocuted a convicted murder who had been on death row for 36 years, in a case that renewed debate on use of the death penalty so long after a crime, reported AFP. David Earl Miller, 61, was put to death at 7:25 pm (0125 GMT) at a high security prison in Nashville, authorities said, over the beating and stabbing death of a young woman with a mental disability. It was the second use of an electric chair in the US in just over a month, after it had not been used since 2013. Miller was physically and sexually abused as a child and living as a drifter in the early 1980s when a Tennessee pastor gave him shelter in exchange for sex. Described by a psychologist as a man consumed with rage, Miller exploded on May 20, 1981 while on a date with 23-year-old Lee Standifer. Miller was convicted of beating and stabbing Standifer to death and leaving the body in a wooded area near the pastor's home. When a 21-year-old cocktail waitress was found murdered and raped with a ketchup bottle in Oklahoma on December 7, 1982 it sent her small-town community into shock. When Debbie Carter was found by a friend in her flat in Ada she was gagged with a bloody towel, hair, semen and blood strewn around her. Smeared prints stained the walls and her body, the word "die" written on her stomach, written in ketchup and nail polish. Debbie had been violated with the ketchup bottle before the killer had used it to leave the scrawled messages, written in blood and polish. Five years later, Ronald Keith Williamson was put on trial and sentenced to death for the crime. On the face of it the police had got their man - but it wasn't as simple as that. Born in 1958, Kevin Cooper is a death row inmate currently held in California's San Quentin prison. He was convicted on several burglary offences between 1977 and 1982. In late 1982, Cooper fled to California after escaping from a Pennsylvania psychiatric facility and was subsequently convicted of two burglaries in the Los Angeles area. He began serving a four-year sentence under the alias David Trautman at the California Institution for Men (CIM) in Chino on April 29, 1983, where he was assigned to the minimum security section. A Japanese man who was freed in 2014 after spending 45 years on death row could be sent back to prison after a court overturned the decision to grant him a retrial. Iwao Hakamada was sentenced to hang in 1968 for the murders two years earlier of a company president, his wife and their two children in Shizuoka prefecture, central Japan. A district court in Shizuoka freed him in 2014 and ordered a retrial, saying police may have fabricated evidence, but the Tokyo high court on Monday ruled against it. It said the lower court had overstated the value of DNA evidence that cast doubt on the safety of his conviction, and that there were insufficient grounds to suspect that police had forged evidence. Hakamada, an 82-year-old former professional boxer, told reporters from his home in Shizuoka that his conviction had always been unsafe. “It is all lies,” he said, according to Kyodo news. A British national held on death row in Ethiopia for four years has been released. Ethiopia-born Andargachew Tsege, also known as Andy, was accused by the Ethiopian authorities of being a terrorist and was tried with others in his absence in 2009 before being sentenced to death. The father-of-three, who fled Ethiopia in the 1970s and sought asylum in the UK in 1979, had been a prominent critic of the country's ruling party.
