Rodriguez/Getty Images and Amanda Edwards/Getty Images It has now been nearly two weeks since 411 female, trans, and nonbinary television creators sent a letter to executives at major studios including Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery, urging them to establish clear health and safety policies for employees in anti-abortion states following the repeal of Roe v. Wade. The original letter demanded studios respond within ten days. Since then, nearly 600 male television writers signed their own letter supporting the demands for safe abortion access and care for pregnancy complications. Now, on August 10, nearly 400 directors added their own names to the cause, signing a statement of support backing the TV writers’ demands for safe, subsidized reproductive health-care access. According to The Hollywood Reporter , signatories include Alex Gibney, Alice Wu, Barry Jenkins, Catherine … [Read more...] about Nearly 400 Directors Join TV Writers to Demand Safe Abortion Access

‘Bullet Train’ Isn’t a Good Movie. But It’s a Great Study of Brad Pitt.
Read enough recent glossy-magazine features on Brad Pitt, and you’ll start picking up on some patterns. He tends to speak reverently about growing up in the Ozarks and less so about his life as a celebrity. He’s as adept at making off-the-cuff jokes as he is at speaking solemnly about the “craft.” He’s cool but artsy, even quoting Rumi and Rilke on occasion. He’ll readily pose in thousand-dollar outfits , but he says that he always tries to avoid putting his face on a film poster. The word rueful comes up a lot about his smile or his demeanor. He’s famous, but he’s sensitive—a guy with a lot of capital- F Feelings about his job. The same could be said about his latest character in the action-comedy Bullet Train. An assassin code-named Ladybug, he’s reluctant about what he does for a living and would rather be anywhere else than aboard the high-speed Shinkansen racing across Japan. For one thing, he’s not the only passenger carrying out a potentially deadly mission; for … [Read more...] about ‘Bullet Train’ Isn’t a Good Movie. But It’s a Great Study of Brad Pitt.

Vince Gilligan preparing next show and it isn’t in ‘Breaking Bad’ universe
After 14 years of creating stories in the Breaking Bad Universe, Vince Gilligan is ready for something new. Gilligan first created Breaking Bad in 2008, and the iconic AMC show, which starred Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, has also led to a sequel film titled El Camino and a spin-off series, Better Call Saul . Now that this chapter of the Breaking Bad franchise is about to close, Gilligan is said to be looking at making something completely different. Vince Gilligan is Preparing his Next Show According to a report from Deadline on Wednesday August 11, Gilligan is preparing a new original TV show that he's said to be pitching to "at least 8-9 networks." ‘Day I caught a couple of strangers getting frisky in my garden’, writes JENNI MURRAY
Right to Roamers are on the march again, with a group of more than 100 Morris dancers and ramblers dressed as sheep invading the Englefield estate in Berkshire last weekend. The protesters were calling for more of the countryside to be made open to the public and claim only eight per cent of land in England is accessible to all of us. It's true that half of England is owned by less than one per cent of its population — 30 per cent owned by the aristocracy, but around 70 per cent is land either owned or rented by farmers who are not necessarily wealthy or posh. They are people who view the countryside not as a leisure activity but as a working environment. Jenni Murray writes that she once found a couple canoodling in our garden as she discusses Right to Roam campaigners I have some experience of the battle between those who own their land and those who feel it's desperately unfair that they can't trudge all over it. On the one hand, I have great sympathy for those who … [Read more...] about ‘Day I caught a couple of strangers getting frisky in my garden’, writes JENNI MURRAY
Sex, violence and power politics: Are you ready to enter the House of the Dragon?
Sky TV Set 300 years before the events of Game Of Thrones, new fantasy drama series House Of The Dragon tells the story of the Targaryen dynasty. War is coming. Two rival houses – HBO and Amazon – draw swords this summer to fight for dominance in the realm of mega-budget fantasy TV. The Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon (HBO/Sky) will meet The Lord of the Rings spin-off The Rings of Power (Prime Video) in an epic battle for eyeballs. The former, though, has the jump on the forces of Middle Earth with a release date almost two weeks earlier, on Monday 22 August in NZ (The Rings of Power is released on Friday, September 2), yet House of the Dragon’s joint showrunner Miguel Sapochnik is playing down talk of the shows being in conflict. “No, we’re not at war with the Lord of the Rings. We have dragons but if you look at the original [Game of Thrones], it had white walkers and giants and direwolves and the Three-Eyed Raven… In a way, we’re making an even more … [Read more...] about Sex, violence and power politics: Are you ready to enter the House of the Dragon?
6 reasons why you’ll love T2 Trainspotting
When Trainspotting first blazed onto the scene, its original and imaginative depiction of a gang of heroin addicts going out, getting wasted and trying to come clean in Edinburgh delivered a brutal one-two punch to Hollywood while perfectly capturing the gritty zeitgeist of 1996. Not only did it portray the giddy highs and crushing lows of young love and friendship, but it also laid bare the harsh truths of a city blighted by high unemployment, rampant drug abuse and the HIV epidemic. Director Danny Boyle’s grubby vision laced as it was with trippy visuals and fierce black humour stands up to this day as one of the most iconic British films ever made. Twenty years on and times have changed, of course, with social media as the main addiction of the day. Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle are back as Renton, Spud, Sick Boy, and Begbie respectively for the sequel with Boyle once again behind the camera, but does it live up to the first film? … [Read more...] about 6 reasons why you’ll love T2 Trainspotting
Forget Grease, if you want to remember Olivia Newton-John at her best, watch Xanadu
LIFE Forget watching Grease, Xanadu was the perfect Olivia Newton John movie. OPINION: This week, you’re going to see a lot of pictures of Olivia Newton-John as Sandy from Grease as you scroll through your socials. Newton-John, 73, died on Tuesday after a decades long battle with breast cancer , and that role is probably her most famous – and if you loved that film, fair play, there are some bangers on that soundtrack. But if you really want to remember Newton-John at her most glorious, her most radiant, then forget that 50s pastiche with its grubby innuendo and awkward sexual politics – watch Xanadu instead. Now, there’s a chance you might never even have heard of this film. It’s been all but forgotten since it came out in 1980 – mostly because in no world could it be considered a good film. But don’t let that put you off. READ MORE: Ponies, Barbie and Grease: All the things I prayed for in the 80s Surprise! Nope: Jordan Peele’s latest is so good it’s worth watching more than once
After preview screenings in select cinemas tonight (August 10), Nope will open nationwide on August 11. Nope (R13, 135 mins) Directed by Jordan Peele **** In the present day, not too far from Los Angeles, there is a horse ranch. Haywood's Hollywood Horses is a family business, run by generations of Haywood men, ever since great, great, grandpa Haywood was filmed riding a horse, in a two-second assemblage of still-frames that has become known as the world's first motion picture. That brief backstory, embedded in the early scenes of Jordan Peele's Nope, is a wonderful assemblage itself – of historical fact and the unknowable. The film clip is real. It was created in 1878 by the inventor – and later, murderer, Eadweard Muybridge. But nobody knows today who the rider was. And somehow, that moment in time is going to echo and resonate through Jordan Peele's Nope. And the idea that a sequence of still photographs might still change how we see the world will form a quite … [Read more...] about Nope: Jordan Peele’s latest is so good it’s worth watching more than once
