The issue of lowering take-up of vaccinations for measles (MMR 1 and 2) is disturbing and serious (The rising toll of measles: nearly 10m cases and 142,000 deaths, 6 December). However, it is far too easy to blame parents and social media for the problem. Research that we conducted at Lancaster University in conjunction with Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust (PCT) a few years ago revealed that there was little evidence of systemic hostility to these vaccines among parents of children who had not completed their vaccination programme by the age of five. Rather, the main problems centred upon the delivery of the service itself. Parents of children who had not received all their vaccinations reported that they had not received letters asking them to attend clinics for these vaccines or, if they had, that it was extremely difficult to attend or to reschedule appointments. As always, the delivery of healthcare was designed to suit staff rather than patients. The facilities at many … [Read more...] about Don’t blame parents for low vaccination take-up

Will there be a grammar school in every town in England? Potentially, yes. Theresa May has announced a £50m fund to allow existing grammar schools to expand. That will encourage places that have been lobbying to follow the example of Sevenoaks, in Kent, where a new grammar school annexe was approved this year. May also suggested new selective schools could be opened, and that existing schools could revise their admissions policies to allow selection. If the government gets legislation in place later this year, the first new selective schools could be admitting pupils as early as autumn 2018. May said the new breed of grammars would help increase social mobility. The Ofsted head Sir Michael Wilshaw calls that “tosh and nonsense”. Who’s right? The evidence is with Wilshaw. Grammar schools now and in the past have admitted very few secondary pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. Moreover, those who fail to get into grammars do worse than in non-selective areas. May … [Read more...] about Who will open new grammar schools and will they boost social mobility?
Theresa May’s plans to open new grammar schools could put at risk years of progress towards a rigorous education for all children, the Conservative former education secretary Nicky Morgan has said. The MP, who performed the role under David Cameron until July, said plans to increase academic selection were at best a distraction and at worst “risk actively undermining six years of progressive education reform”. Morgan is the most senior Tory to speak out against May’s plans, although Neil Carmichael, the Conservative chair of the education select committee, has also expressed reservations. In a Facebook post, Morgan said she welcomed the aims of creating a more meritocratic society and encouraging greater collaboration between universities, state schools and the private sector. But, she added: “I believe that an increase in pupil segregation on the basis of academic selection would be at best a distraction from crucial reforms to raise standards and narrow … [Read more...] about May’s grammar school plans ‘put six years of educational progress at risk’
JEREMY Clarkson is a household name, most famous for presenting Top Gear from 2002 to 2015 and The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime. But he isn't just on the telly - he's a writer too and also pens weekly columns for The Sun and The Sunday Times. Here is the lowdown on him... How old is Jeremy Clarkson? Jeremy was born on April 11, 1960, in Doncaster, West Riding of Yorkshire. That makes him 59. His mum, Shirley, was a teacher and his dad, Edward, was a travelling salesman. Jeremy didn't grow up overly wealthy. Although his parents put their son's name down in advance for private schools, they had no way of actually paying the tuition fees. They managed to raise the funds for Jeremy's schooling by selling Paddington Bear stuffed toys through their tea cosy business. However, Jeremy hated school and has previously said it made him a "suicidal wreck". He says he was expelled for "drinking, smoking and generally making a nuisance of himself".What's Jeremy Clarkson's net worth? Clarkson is … [Read more...] about How old is Jeremy Clarkson and what is The Grand Tour host’s net worth?
At least 10 people were killed and 30 injured when a bus packed with school students burst into flames after it was hit by a FedEx lorry which had veered across a highway in California. Terrified teenagers jumped from the bus while others scrambled through smashed windows to safety. They were then forced to look on in horror as the coach, with up to 48 on board, exploded with fellow pupils and teachers still trapped inside. According to the Highway Patrol at least five of the victims were teenage students. Three adults and drivers of both the vehicles also perished in the horror smash near the town of Orland, North of Sacramento. The bus had been heading to the Humboldt State university as part of a programme to bring low-income and first-generation college students from the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas to the campus. But the trip turned into tragedy when the driver of the 18-wheeler FedEx tractor-trailer is thought to have lost control, crossed he central barrier on the … [Read more...] about Ten dead as schoolbus packed with pupils explodes after being hit head-on by FedEx lorry in California
