I was first bewitched by the tale of Swan Lake back in the 1980s - watching the traditional ballet in what felt like the eaves of the Sunderland Empire. The rousing score and the grace of the beautiful ballerinas were everything a little girl dreams of in a ballet. But on Tuesday night I fell in love all over with it again. Sir Matthew Bourne's dark rendition of the traditional Swan Lake classic first rocked the ballet world in 1995. Fast forward 24 years and it remains a cult classic. If you've never seen the show - believe the hype - it is out of this world. Matthew Bourne's choreography is nothing short of genius, with nods to modern dance floor moves and ballroom styles but sticking faithfully to the timeless Tchaikovsy score. The swan scenes are especially thrilling, with the macho pack hissing, pruning and leaping across the stage with impossible energy. Pupils were making waves as part of World Book Day celebrations. Children from Seaton Sluice First School were among four schools invited to workshops aboard DFDS’ King Seaways ferry.The workshops – led by authors Gwyneth Rees, Miles Slater and Lynne Chapman – took place on the docked ship at the Port of Tyne and demonstrated unique ways of storytelling.Award-winning novelist Gwyneth Rees shared some childhood experiences of writing stories and told the children about her first book, which she wrote at just ten years old.She led an interactive discussion with the children about where creative ideas can come from and how imagination and ideas sparked by real life situations can make for truly engaging stories.Musician, poet, author and enthusiastic storyteller Miles Salter had the children on their feet, singing and dancing along to his catchy songs and skilful guitar playing.Illustrator of over 30 children’s books, Lynne Chapman taught the children how to make … [Read more...] about Pupils onboard World Book Day celebrations
Hartlepool school pupils have been making waves with their biggest ever live radio broadcast. Stranton Primary School in Stockton Road has its own radio studio to give pupils the chance to experience life as a broadcast journalist. A team of eight pupils led by radio teacher and station manager Gavin Lancaster run Straton FM - a community internet radio station that broadcasts music, and news bulletins and radio shows 24/7.To mark World Book Day on Thursday, March 7, pupils held their longest live radio broadcast.The team of pupils, aged from nine to 11, were broken in to teams made up of junior and senior reporters to go live on air interviewing guests and delivering news and weather bulletins.It was their longest live broadcast since the studio opened more than four years ago, with pupils live on air from 9am to 3pm.
