I uncovered America’s secret serial killer – he was as psychotic as Ted Bundy and kept sick snaps of victims in shoebox
NO one knew that the blue-eyed and “silver-tongued” Bruce Lindahl was a serial killer - until new DNA technology revealed his horrendous crimes. Lindahl is believed to have murdered at least nine young people during a nine-year period up until 1981 in the United States and is being investigated for many more cold cases. The true nature of this stone-hearted kidnapper, rapist and strangler only emerged when Detective Chris Loudon tried to solve the 46-year-old case of slain schoolgirl Pam Maurer, 16, from Lisle, near Chicago in Illinois. His investigation led him to a box full of naked photographs of young women taken by the twisted Lindahl. Inside were Polaroids and prints of often terrified, underage and drugged females either tricked or forced to come home with the sadistic predator. Most escaped alive, but many did not. NZ Post to shift sites for mail motherload
The Manawatu Mail Centre will be processing all of the lower North Island's post at a newly confirmed site in Palmerston North by this time next year. New Zealand Post has purchased the lease to 39 Malden St, the current processing site of Steel and Tube, and will shift from its Tremaine Ave building to the Roslyn site once it begins processing Wellington's mail in March. It is a decision that has been a long time coming after the government organisation announced it was cutting its main mail centres from six to three in June. That brought with it an announcement of 180 new jobs for Palmerston North. Those numbers could not be accommodated at the current Tremaine and Matthews Ave site on the western side of Coronation Park, which has a warehouse that is just 2111 square metres in size. The 9401sqm Malden St site has a roughly 4000sqm building on it, which NZ Post will renovate and expand by about 1500sqm to accommodate four mail processing machines. Lt-Col Angus Southwood, officer involved in a covert Cold War reconnaissance operation – obituary
Lieutenant-Colonel Angus Southwood, who has died aged 92, played a notable part in one of the most remarkable espionage coups of the Cold War. Based at Potsdam, East Germany, Southwood served with the British Commanders’-in-Chief Mission to the Soviet Forces in Germany (Brixmis) from 1965 to 1967. The compact whereby the British and Soviet commanders-in-chief exchanged military liaison missions remained in force from 1946 until the reunification of Germany in 1990. There were similar arrangements for American and French forces. Brixmis was not originally intended to become involved in covert reconnaissance but it developed into an arm of British Intelligence, with a specialist map-making team, electronic, signals and photographic experts and light aircraft with dedicated RAF pilots. Differing interpretation of the rules led to disputes and some sharp clashes. On the afternoon of April 6 1966, the Soviet Air Forces’ new long-range interceptor, the Yak-28P Nato code-named Firebar, … [Read more...] about Lt-Col Angus Southwood, officer involved in a covert Cold War reconnaissance operation – obituary
The Commonwealth Games are rooted in slavery – it’s time to axe them
Sign up for the View from Westminster email for expert analysis straight to your inbox Get our free View from Westminster email “The Commonwealth Games are little more than a PR exercise for Rule Britannia,” a friend of mine said during a discussion about the major sporting event. Although the games are an opportunity for talented athletes from various walks of life to showcase their abilities on a world stage, and potentially change their individual lives, I’ll admit that the concept of it sticks in my throat a bit. I love a good game as much as the next person, but it sticks in my throat because the Commonwealth, as an institution, is rooted in chattel slavery and the brutalisation of African people: people such as my ancestors, who were abducted from Nigeria, brought to Jamaica and forced to work. Moreover, the fact that so many contemporary socio-economic inequalities experienced by citizens of Commonwealth countries and their families is a … [Read more...] about The Commonwealth Games are rooted in slavery – it’s time to axe them
