Humorist David Sedaris has a summer travel tip: I always thought I'd know who I got my COVID from, but in the end I have no idea. Someone in Alaska, I'm guessing. And that's OK. If you've never been, you should, if only for the wildlife. One afternoon in Kodiak a pilot offered to take me up in his coffin-sized plane and give me a tour. "What are you interested in?" he asked. I'd already seen more eagles than I could count, and so I answered, "Bears." "They're not really congregating this time of year," he said. "But I could fly you over my parents' house and you could see that instead." So, I did. In many of the towns I went to there, there was no place to buy a necktie. Go to a restaurant or the grocery store and everyone was dressed to kill ... something, and then bathe in its blood. People's yards had piles of junk in them: old water heaters, outboard motors. I mentioned this to someone, and she explained that everything had to be shipped from the lower 48. … [Read more...] about David Sedaris on Alaska, land of eagles and no neckties

Pictured: Lightning strikes fuel depot in Cuba leaving seventeen firefighters missing
More than a dozen firefighters are missing after multiple explosions at a fuel depot in western Cuba engulfed the area in flames leaving more than 70 people injured. Authorities have blamed a lightning strike on Friday night for the incident, but the fire spread early Saturday from one fuel tank to a second, sending a huge plume of black smoke into the sky. Emergency services were still trying to quell the blaze at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Havana last night, but some 17 firefighters have been reported missing. At least 15 people have been taken to hospital, while nearly 1,000 have been evacuated from their homes in the area, according to regional officials. The Facebook page of the provincial government of Matanzas said the number of injured had reached 77, while 17 people were missing. The Presidency of the Republic said the 17 were "firefighters who were in the nearest area trying to prevent the spread." Cuban President … [Read more...] about Pictured: Lightning strikes fuel depot in Cuba leaving seventeen firefighters missing
Trade unions: What are they and who is allowed to strike?
Published 6 days ago Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Unions representing railway workers, barristers and Royal Mail staff have announced strikes in recent weeks. The UK's biggest private sector union has also warned of a "summer of discontent" over pay. Trade unions are organisations which help workers negotiate with employers. They often help employees ask for more pay, or better working conditions. Unions also represent members who have problems at work, or who are facing a disciplinary procedure. If negotiations with employers don't work, a trade union's members might decide to take action such as a strike. Unions exist across many industries, including firefighting, teaching and transport. Almost one in four UK workers (23%) were union members in 2021 - a total of 6.4 million people, according to government statistics. After peaking at 13.2 … [Read more...] about Trade unions: What are they and who is allowed to strike?

This has been the most extraordinary General Election since 1918
The General Election on Thursday was the most extraordinary in British history since modern elections began in 1918. We’ve had some exciting votes, from the closer than expected result of 2010 to the transformational victories of Clement Attlee, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair in 1945, 1979 and 1997. But I’ve known nothing like 2017 in the dozen elections I have lived through since February 1974 for sheer unpredictability, drama and emotion . Ted Heath’s February 1974 general election, extraordinary in itself, provides the best mirror through which to view the utterly historic events of the last 36 hours. In both February 1974 and this time, Conservative Prime Ministers who were ill at ease with themselves and not natural communicators called a general election that they need not have triggered only to see it backfire disastrously against them and their party, leaving the country in a desperately vulnerable position at a time of great national need. Probe a little deeper, … [Read more...] about This has been the most extraordinary General Election since 1918
