The day Iceland’s women went on strike
By Kirstie Brewer Published 23 October 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Forty years ago, the women of Iceland went on strike - they refused to work, cook and look after children for a day. It was a moment that changed the way women were seen in the country and helped put Iceland at the forefront of the fight for equality. When Ronald Reagan became the US President, one small boy in Iceland was outraged. "He can't be a president - he's a man!" he exclaimed to his mother when he saw the news on the television. It was November 1980, and Vigdis Finnbogadottir, a divorced single mother, had won Iceland's presidency that summer. The boy didn't know it, but Vigdis (all Icelanders go by their first name) was Europe's first female president, and the first woman in the world to be democratically elected as a head of state. Many more Icelandic children may well have grown up … [Read more...] about The day Iceland’s women went on strike

Manx: Bringing a language back from the dead
Published 31 January 2013 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Condemned as a dead language, Manx - the native language of the Isle of Man - is staging an extraordinary renaissance, writes Rob Crossan. Road signs, radio shows, mobile phone apps, novels - take a drive around the Isle of Man today and the local language is prominent. But just 50 years ago Manx seemed to be on the point of extinction. "If you spoke Manx in a pub on the island in the 1960s, it was considered provocative and you were likely to find yourself in a brawl," recalls Brian Stowell, a 76-year-old islander who has penned a Manx-language novel, The Vampire Murders, and presents a radio show on Manx Radio promoting the language every Sunday. The language itself has similarities with the Gaelic tongues spoken in the island's neighbours, Ireland and Scotland. A century ago, "Moghrey mie" would have been … [Read more...] about Manx: Bringing a language back from the dead
Silence Breakers of #MeToo movement beat President Trump as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year
The Silence Breakers—women nationwide who spoke out against sexual harassment in the #MeToo movement—were named Time magazine's "Person of the Year" Wednesday, beating President Donald Trump weeks after he bragged about being considered for the honor. The #MeToo campaign exploded after more than 80 women stepped forward to accuse Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault starting in October. Since then, there have been dozens of other male leaders in politics, media and entertainment called out for alleged or confirmed misconduct. The movement fueled "a moment of reckoning about the treatment of women in the workplace," noted Time. "It began with individual acts of courage," said Time's editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal. "This is just the beginning." The annual award is granted to a person, group or organization that had an outsized influence on the world "for good or ill." Other contenders for the magazine's 95th title included Trump, for fundamentally … [Read more...] about Silence Breakers of #MeToo movement beat President Trump as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year

Who, What, Why: How is lost luggage found?
Who, What, Why Published 4 April 2015 Share close Share page Copy link About sharing Some passengers jetting away for Easter will inevitably lose their luggage. Why does this happen, and how are passengers reunited with their bags, asks Chris Stokel-Walker. Holidays are meant to be a break from the stresses of everyday life - unless you're standing at the airport's baggage carousel an hour after your flight touched down, everyone else has left, and you're facing two weeks on the beach with nothing but the clothes you're wearing. Since 2007, airlines have got better at sending on our luggage to the correct destination. For every 1,000 passengers who fly, there are 7.3 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers today, compared with 18.9 in 2007. But why do our bags disappear in the first place? Around half the bags that go missing disappear because of "transfer mishandling" - being moved from … [Read more...] about Who, What, Why: How is lost luggage found?
