CARE homes can can impose 'no jab, no job' contracts on new staff, the Justice Secretary has confirmed. Robert Buckland said care homes must have "obvious rationale" to require employees to be vaccinated. He added that the Government would not be adopting a "blanket approach" to care homes imposing "no jabs, no jobs" policies. Speaking to the BBC , he said: "Future contracts and contracts of employment are indeed matters between employers and employees. "I think that where such conditions are imposed there needs to be a very clear rationale for them. "In a care home, a closed environment where there are vulnerable residents, I would argue there does seem to be an obvious rationale. "I think it will depend very much on each setting and the particular context. That is why I don't think it would be right to say there can be a blanket approach here because we need to go back to the fundamental fact that vaccines are not compulsory here in the UK. Auckland is set to go back into lockdown after a new case of COVID-19 was detected on Saturday. It is the second lockdown for Auckland's nearly 2 million residents in a matter of weeks. They entered a snap three-day lockdown on February 14 after a family of three was diagnosed with the more transmissible UK variant of COVID-19. The seven-day lockdown will go into force at 6 a.m. local time on Sunday. "It's frustrating. I know it is," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said at a news conference. Prince Philip has begun his second weekend in hospital in what is now his longest ever stay as he battles an infection. The Duke of Edinburgh , 99, was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last Tuesday evening as a precautionary measure after feeling unwell, and walked into the building unaided. Buckingham Palace said last Tuesday that Philip was 'comfortable' and 'responding' to medical help. His son Prince Edward also said this week Philip was 'a lot better' but 'looking forward to getting out' with the Royal Family were keeping their 'fingers crossed'. Today, the Duke passed his longest hospital stay as he continues to get treated for the infection for a 12th day. He previously spent 11 days in hospital in 2013 after an operation on his abdomen. COVID-19: 290 more UK deaths reported as 19.6m people have first vaccine
The UK has reported another 290 coronavirus deaths and 7,434 new cases, while 19.6 million people have now had their first vaccine dose. This compares to the 345 deaths and 8,523 cases recorded on Friday. Another 504,493 had their first dose of the COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total to 19,682,048. The total number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavrus in the UK now stands at 122,705. The UK government has set the target of offering a first coronavirus vaccine to all adults in the UK by the end of the July.
