Somalia’s clan system: undermining democracy?
Plans to proceed with Somalia's 2021 general election have fallen into further disarray, as the ongoing power vacuum and divisions between political leaders threaten to steer the country into a protracted political crisis. President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed's term officially expired on Monday, prompting an alliance of opposition parties to claim it no longer recognized the president, and propose the creation of a national council of lawmakers, opposition leaders and members of civil society to lead the Horn of Africa nation. Somalia's deadline to hold elections by February 8 was missed after the central government and federal states were unable to break an impasse on how to proceed with the vote. Further complicating matters is the country's unique electoral system which has long centered around a clan-based model. The indirect system sees representatives from various clans across the country choose members of parliament. Ant and Dec wear matching tartan golfing outfits as they mess around in prank video
Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were the ultimate fashion twins as they messed around in a fun golfing video. In the video shared on Instagram , Ant pulled his best model moves and took a golf club to practice his swing. At one point, Dec was seen cackling as he threw water on his pal’s face all while rocking a navy sweater over his bright blue outfit. Dec, 45, then ran off before Ant, also 45, could retaliate. They captioned the video: "#fashion #whatiwore #golfchic #golfglam #golf4life #golfindastylist #ontherunway". Their video comes after the comedy duo shared their worries about the Saturday Night Takeaway audience now that they have to appear via their webcams. Somalia: Roadside bombing kills at least 13 after presidential talks break down
At least 13 members of Somalia's security forces were killed on Sunday in a roadside bombing attack, shortly after emergency talks between Somalia's politicians failed to end a stalemate over how to select a new president. The bomb hit a convoy belonging to regional intelligence units of the Galmudug state, senior military official General Masud Mohamud said. The convoy had been traveling near the town of Dhusamareeb, which had hosted talks over Somalia's delayed election. Talks ended without a conclusion on Saturday, just days before the term of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed was set to expire. "We are getting terrible reports that 13 security men are all killed in the blast which destroyed their vehicle in the Galmudug province," said Mohamud. Among those killed was a senior regional intelligence officer. The Islamist terror group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on its Andalus radio station. The group has ramped up attacks in the Galmudug state in … [Read more...] about Somalia: Roadside bombing kills at least 13 after presidential talks break down
