Businesses in and around the Whitby area are celebrating success once again at the White Rose Awards. Estbek House, in Sandsend, walked away for a second year running with the Inns and Restaurants with Rooms award, beating The Ellerby County Inn to the award.The management and staff at The Ellerby, however, had reason to celebrate still, as they walked away as highly-commended in the Outstanding Customer Service award.Also highly-commended was Eighteen97, in Goathland, in the Guest Accommodation of the Year award, coming in ahead of Dillons of Whitby and Orchard Lodge in Flixton.The Holiday Park of the Year award found its way to North Yorkshire too, with Vale of Pickering Caravan Park winning out on the night.Heading up the finalists for Scarborough was the Open Air Theatre, which made it to the shortlist in the Tourism Event of the Year category. A Hull mum has heaped praise on Cottingham’s very own 'Miss Honey' from Matilda. Henley Bodham, seven, has learning difficulties and is expected to be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome this week, meaning he has struggled to adapt to life at school. However, according to his mum, Karen Bodham, one teacher has gone above and beyond to strike up a special bond with her son, even going as far to say she became like a “second mum” during two years teaching him. Katie Mitchell, who teaches at Hallgate Primary School in Cottingham, helped Henley to come on “leaps and bounds” during the six terms she taught him and his classmates after struggling during his first year at school. “In foundation he couldn’t write his own name or anything and he got behind academically,” Ms Bodham said. “When he joined Mrs Mitchell’s he came on leaps and bounds. Terrific teachers and star students were among the winners of the Golden Apple education awards last night as the event marked its third year celebrating success in education in North and North East Lincolnshire. More than 150 people gathered at the Forest Pines Hotel at Brigg in North Lincolnshire for a glamorous finals event. Awards were presented by Lizzie Rose and Carl Wheatley from BBC Radio Humbershire's Breakfast Show. The Grimsby and Scunthorpe Telegraph hold the awards to find the teachers, students, schools, academies who have gone the extra mile. The awards are supported by a host of local companies and partnered by Cristal, world leading chemical industries company based at Stallingborough. The judging panel was made up of Gill Ross from the John Ross Foundation, John Legget College principal Leon Riley and the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Councillor Ron Shepherd.
