Lung cancer patients could survive twice as long after NHS approves ‘pioneering’ drug

May 13, 2022 by www.telegraph.co.uk

Lung cancer patients could survive twice as long after a “pioneering” drug was approved on the NHS. Around 550 patients a year with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have already undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy will benefit from the new treatment. Clinical trials of Durvalumab, manufactured by AstraZeneca , found it can double the overall time someone can survive with the aggressive form of lung cancer from two and a half to five years. NHS England reached a deal with the manufacturer to roll out the drug after it was approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice). Nice said it recommended the treatment for use after clinical evidence found not only does it increase survival time for patients, but also the time it takes for the cancer to progress. NSCLC is the most common form of lung cancer, accounting for around 85 to 90 per cent of cases. Around 48,500 new lung cancer cases are identified every year in the UK. … [Read more...] about Lung cancer patients could survive twice as long after NHS approves ‘pioneering’ drug

Only Fools and Horses actor Patrick Murray ‘cured’ of lung cancer after chemotherapy: ‘I’m over the moon’

May 22, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Only Fools and Horses actor Patrick Murray has shared a positive update about his cancer battle. The 65-year-old, who is best known for playing wide-boy Mickey Pearce in the beloved sitcom, was diagnosed with lung cancer in July 2021 and underwent an operation in October to remove the tumour. He then went through a round of chemotherapy to prevent the cancer from returning. Murray thanked his followers for their ‘lovely messages’ and explained his health status in several tweets on Sunday, writing: ‘During this chemo , another tumour was discovered in my liver. ‘Luckily for me this cancer was unconnected to the lung cancer and was also treatable. I had a procedure called TACE to deal with this .’ TACE (transarterial chemoembolisation) is a treatment for liver cancer that uses a combination of chemotherapy and an agent (small plastic beads) to block the blood vessels supplying the tumour (embolisation). This treatment is usually used to control the cancer, … [Read more...] about Only Fools and Horses actor Patrick Murray ‘cured’ of lung cancer after chemotherapy: ‘I’m over the moon’

Only Fools And Horses star Patrick Murray announces his lung cancer is ‘cured’

May 22, 2022 by news.sky.com

British sitcom star Patrick Murray has said his lung cancer is "cured" and that a tumour discovered in his liver is "shrinking" in response to treatment. Murray, 65, who played Mickey Pearce in Only Fools And Horses, revealed his diagnosis earlier this year. He said that scans had detected a cancerous lung tumour which he had an operation to remove, alongside chemotherapy. Follow-up scans found another tumour in his liver that he said was unconnected to his lung cancer, which was also treatable. He said he was treated with Tace, or transcatheter arterial chemoembolization, which is a combination of chemotherapy and other medicines designed to restrict blood supply to the tumour. Advertisement In an update on Twitter, he wrote: "Thanks again for all your lovely messages. As you may know, I was diagnosed with lung cancer last July. "After an op in Oct to remove the tumour I had chemo to help prevent the cancer returning. May 22, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz

Te Aho o Te Kahu is standardising bowel cancer reporting throughout New Zealand so leaders can make informed clinical and equity decisions. A Southland woman is walking 115km to raise funds for Bowel Cancer New Zealand and honour her mum. It took just 10 months for a Southland family’s lives to change forever. That’s the time Steph Rossiter had with her mum between her diagnosis and when she became one of the 100 Kiwis who die of bowel cancer in New Zealand each month. “Once we found out what mum had, we realise it was quite common,” Rossiter said. Next month, Rossiter will join others impacted by the disease for Bowel Cancer New Zealand’s Move Your Butt campaign to honour her mum and raise funds for the organisation that helped her family navigate their cancer journey. Adele Roberts says bowel cancer and stoma have taught her to ‘appreciate her body’

May 23, 2022 by metro.co.uk

Adele Roberts has opened up on her cancer diagnosis, revealing that the devastating news allowed her to ‘appreciate her body’ more. The Radio 1 DJ shared in October last year that she’d been diagnosed with bowel cancer. She underwent surgery to have her tumour removed, and now has a stoma – an opening on the abdomen that can be connected to either your digestive or urinary system to allow waste (urine or faeces) to be diverted out of your body. Reflecting on her journey so far, Adele, 43, explained: ‘Being diagnosed with cancer has meant I’ve learned to appreciate my body; be grateful that it works; be grateful they found the tumour in time to remove it and be grateful (that modern medicine means I can) have a stoma.’ As she covered Women’s Health, Adele added to the magazine: ‘I feel like I love my body more than ever.’ She went on to say that she tries not to let it beat her mentally. The star has been open about her battle with cancer and recently shared … [Read more...] about Adele Roberts says bowel cancer and stoma have taught her to ‘appreciate her body’

It’s more than just swearing… How a heart surgeon with Tourette’s syndrome loses his tics the moment he picks up his scalpel

May 21, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

Widespread myths about Tourette’s syndrome are preventing young people from spotting early signs of the disability and seeking help, experts and patients living with the condition have warned. Studies show that roughly half of all cases of the neurological disorder – which causes involuntary behaviours – are undiagnosed, leaving thousands without vital support. ‘There is a lack of understanding of the condition from the general public,’ said Dr Melina Malli, a researcher in Tourette’s syndrome at Manchester Metropolitan University. ‘People refer to stereotypes of what people with Tourette’s should do – like swearing – so those with less well-known symptoms might not be diagnosed.’ Dr Wilson Tsai was diagnosed with Tourette's when he was in medical school, despite that, he has become a heart and lung surgeon based in the United States (picture posed by model) Studies show that roughly half of all cases of the neurological disorder – which causes involuntary … [Read more...] about It’s more than just swearing… How a heart surgeon with Tourette’s syndrome loses his tics the moment he picks up his scalpel

DR ELLIE CANNON: How bad will these tremors get if there really is no cure?

May 21, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk

I have suffered something called essential tremor since childhood. I’m now 77, and five years ago it began to get severe. The tremor affects my whole body and I hate going out as I feel people are staring or laughing at me. I asked my GP if I could see a neurologist but the hospital refused, saying there was no cure. They suggested a website I could read instead. I want to know what to expect in the future, so I can be prepared. I feel so alone. Tremor can be a disabling, distressing and embarrassing condition to live with. It is also one of the most common neurological problems, often starting in childhood. With any condition that has been lifelong, if there has been a worsening I would say this warrants a further assessment. Other causes of tremor could be Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis and side effects of medications. Tremor can be a disabling, distressing and embarrassing condition to live with. It is also one of the most common neurological problems, often … [Read more...] about DR ELLIE CANNON: How bad will these tremors get if there really is no cure?
