I share the concerns of the trenchant defenders of diversity of thought in education (Letters, 13 November). Having taught A-level English literature, I challenge any minister to explain how any faithful, perceptive reading of William Blake’s London or Shelley’s Ode to the West Wind could avoid discussion of the poets’ ferocious critiques of the status quo. Oddly enough, exam boards never seemed to include the stultifying tedium of late Wordsworth in their syllabus requirements. Might it be that establishment conformism is at odds with creative fire? Leadsom is no EU obsessive. Her real passion is early intervention. She is a trustee of the Oxpip (Oxford parent infant project) charity and will be making a presentation to Cameron in No 10 this week as part of the Tory 2020 group. It wasn't supported by our research at all. I think the newspaper stories must have had an impact on policy." The "newspaper stories" Dr King was referring to were, presumably, the Daily Mail's relentless campaign to get cannabis's classification as a class C drug – introduced by the not normally liberal David Blunkett – back up to (at least) class B. And this was not wholly unrelated to Gordon Brown's campaign for the Labour leadership, the year before, to gain the endorsement of the Mail and its hysterical editor. There couldn't – gasp – have been a quid pro quo? … [Read more...] about Narcomania by Max Daly and Steve Sampson; The War We Never Fought by Peter Hitchens – review
