Tradespeople in Bristol are being targeted by sophisticated thieves who are using technology to steal thousands of pounds worth of tools. Bristol was among the top 10 most-targeted cities for tool theft last year, with thieves using electronic key fobs to open vans, new research has revealed. The average value of stolen goods, according to insurance provider Simply Business, was £1,692 in 2017, but some people claimed as much as £11,000. With vehicle-related thefts on the rise, there is growing concern among the trade community over the safety of equipment. The Office for National Statistics also reported an 18 per cent increase in this type of crime last year. Previously, thieves were using their knees to apply pressure to van doors, before pulling them open from the top. TSB boss Paul Pester faces losing out on millions of pounds in bonus pay as the high street challenger bank counts costs of more than £100m from its botched computer system migration. Thousands of customers have been left without access to their bank accounts online for days since the bank tried to move to a new system. It had previously been using systems provided by former owner Lloyds, before it was snapped up by Spanish bank Sabadell in 2015. TSB will waive all overdraft fees and interest charges for April at a cost of £10m, it announced today. Retailers may be closing their stores at record speeds, but new figures show the future may not be online - based on the number of people abandoning their baskets at the digital checkout. A report by Barclaycard found shoppers have adopted a 'surf and turf' attitude to online spending - with £29.37 worth of items put in baskets a month, but later cancelled. The trend could spell bad news for Britain's struggling high street - who are closing stores in the dozens - and investing millions of pounds online instead. In fact, figures show carefree online shoppers that 'change their minds' are costing retailers £18 billion a year. The study uncovered that 41% of shoppers have abandoned a purchase online in the past year compared to 24% in-stores. It suggests we're not ready to let go of that face to face experience, just yet.
