Social distancing and mask rules will have to last until at least AUTUMN, ministers believe after SAGE doomsters pushed back on easing lockdown

· February 12, 2021 ·

Social distancing and face mask rules will have to last until at least the autumn under plans being discussed by Downing Street to ease Britain out of coronavirus lockdown. No10's top scientific advisers yesterday warned there must be no more than 10,000 Britons infected on any given day — the equivalent of fewer than 1,000 daily cases — before Boris Johnson should start easing the measures, or they claim the country risks allowing new mutant variants to spawn. To dip below the 1,000 mark, cases must drop by at least 15-fold as official data shows around 15,000 Britons are testing positive each day. It is understood that the Prime Minister's plan to end lockdown hinges on the expectation that people will continue to adhere to social distancing rules and wear facemasks for months to come, the Times reported. Experts have even suggested these restrictions may need to remain in place until the end of the year. A Whitehall insider said: 'The thinking is that social distancing … [Read more...] about Social distancing and mask rules will have to last until at least AUTUMN, ministers believe after SAGE doomsters pushed back on easing lockdown

Why can’t England have clearer rules on exercise? Ministers come under mounting pressure to clarify ‘woolly’ lockdown restrictions and set firm distances like counterparts in Scotland and Northern Ireland

· January 12, 2021 ·

Ministers are under mounting pressure to clarify exactly how far people can travel for exercise amid public and police confusion over 'woolly' lockdown rules. Government advice urges people to stay 'local' but does not specify a distance in law, which has resulted in officers making their own interpretations and incorrectly fining walkers driving just five miles from home. Boris Johnson, who has himself come under fire for cycling in the Olympic Park seven miles from his Downing Street flat, has been urged to follow the devolved administrations and set clear boundaries. In Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has permitted people to travel up to five miles outside their local authority area, and in Northern Ireland, the Executive has placed a 10-mile limit. Wales also has a 'stay local' rule. Hopes of immediate clarification for England appeared to be scotched this evening as a senior police officer said people should instead use their own judgement. Chairman of the National Police … [Read more...] about Why can’t England have clearer rules on exercise? UK records most covid deaths in a day since epidemic started: Fatality count DOUBLES in a week to 1,325 with 68,000 new cases as SAGE warns R rate could now be as high as 1.4 and up to 150,000 people are catching Covid each day

· January 8, 2021 ·

Britain today suffered its deadliest day since the Covid pandemic began after health chiefs declared 1,325 more Covid fatalities and another record-high 68,053 infections. The grisly death toll - which has doubled in a week and surpasses the 1,224 declared on April 21 in the darkest day of the first wave - takes the UK to the brink of almost 80,000 victims. Experts fear the daily death counts will continue to spiral because of rocketing cases and hospitalisations, piling further pressure on Boris Johnson to speed up the sluggish vaccination programme designed to get Britain out of lockdown by mid-February. Department of Health figures show the UK has recorded more than 50,000 cases for 11 days in a row, with the five worst days of the pandemic all occurring since the start of 2021. Cases have risen by almost 30 per cent week-on-week. But a senior SAGE official today warned the actual number of Britons currently getting infected every day is closer to 150,000, claiming that the size of … [Read more...] about UK records most covid deaths in a day since epidemic started: Fatality count DOUBLES in a week to 1,325 with 68,000 new cases as SAGE warns R rate could now be as high as 1.4 and up to 150,000 people are catching Covid each day

Britain faces a second summer write off: Travel firms, wedding venues, pubs, and event organisers warn uncertainty over when Covid rules will end – if EVER – means hundreds of thousands of jobs and businesses will go

· February 9, 2021 ·

Travel and hospitality bosses today warn the UK faces a second summer write off as uncertainty over when restrictions will end squashes demand for holidays and social venues. Millions of Britons have already booked trips ahead of the Prime Minister's announcement of the country's plan for easing restrictions on February 22 and Matt Hancock has previously predicted a 'Great British Summer'. But several government figures are hinting coronavirus restrictions could last well into summer - despite fears it will spell the death knell for businesses across the UK when the furlough scheme ends on April 30. Mr Hancock indicated today tough border measures - Including ten-day isolation at home for all travellers and hotel quarantine for 33 'red list' countries - will need to be in place until vaccines have been tweaked to deal with variant strains in the Autumn. It came after Jonathan Van Tam said yesterday the 'more elaborate your plans are for summer holidays, in terms of crossing borders, in … [Read more...] about Britain faces a second summer write off: Travel firms, wedding venues, pubs, and event organisers warn uncertainty over when Covid rules will end – if EVER – means hundreds of thousands of jobs and businesses will go
