Pacific islands’ alliance – how China is using rifts to its advantage

· November 2, 2021 ·

The Pacific Islands Forum – the region's most influential body that is long supported by Japan , the United States, Australia and New Zealand – is on the brink of collapsing after five of the 18 member states announced their withdrawal in a dispute over the leadership of the organization. The resignations of the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Kiribati have triggered concern in allied countries as the breakup of the regional bloc could leave some states vulnerable to approaches from Beijing and deepen geopolitical and economic rivalries that are already emerging. Washington, Tokyo, Wellington and Canberra point out that China has deep pockets and has already been busy providing loans and development assistance across the region in return for access to resources, markets or infrastructure facilities. The crisis in the forum began in early February, when Henry Puna, the former prime minister of the Cook Islands, was appointed secretary … [Read more...] about Pacific islands’ alliance – how China is using rifts to its advantage

Take a trip to the Maldives’ palm-lined beaches and crystal-clear waters for just £14pp a night

· March 1, 2021 ·

A HONEYMOON in the Maldives has always been a bucket-list trip that risks breaking the bank . . . until now. The island of Dhiffushi offers the palm-lined beaches and crystal-clear waters newlyweds would expect from a holiday to the atoll nation — but at a fraction of the cost. Rooms at a top-rated 3H hotel on the Indian Ocean island are from just £99.39pp for a week. That is cheaper than a single night on most resort islands. So what’s the catch? Unusually for the Maldives, Dhiffushi is a residential island where locals live alongside tourists. A decade ago, the mile-long stretch of land became the first non-resort island in the Indian Ocean to host holidaymakers after its government opened up local islands to tourism. The Maldives is a Muslim country and, unlike resort islands, alcohol is prohibited on local islands. For visitors after a taste of the real Maldives, the trade-off is worthwhile. But you need not detox entirely: Guests can visit a floating … [Read more...] about Take a trip to the Maldives’ palm-lined beaches and crystal-clear waters for just £14pp a night

More hope for staycations as scientists say NO Covid outbreaks linked to crowded British beaches last year

· February 17, 2021 ·

FRESH hope was sparked for British beach holidays this morning, after it was revealed that there has never been a Covid-19 outbreak linked to a crowded beach. Professor Mark Woolhouse, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, told MPs during the the Science and Technology Committee: "Over the summer we were treated to all this on the television news and pictures of crowded beaches, and there was an outcry about this. "There were no outbreaks linked to crowded beaches , there's never been a Covid-19 outbreak linked to a beach ever anywhere in the world to the best of my knowledge." He said that mass gatherings - such as a horse racing event - are an exception because they do not involve social distancing and there are "pinch points" like travel and refreshment facilities. He added: "I think we do have to understand where the risks are so that we can do as much as possible safely." Last summer, there was uproar over pictures of popular … [Read more...] about More hope for staycations as scientists say NO Covid outbreaks linked to crowded British beaches last year
