PARADISE- Reuters Two monster wildfires burned out of control on Nov. 10 in northern and southern California, having already killed at least nine people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes. Nine people were found dead in and around the Northern California town of Paradise, where more than 6,700 homes and businesses were burned down by the Camp Fire, making it the most destructive blaze in California history, according to state's department of Forestry and Fire Protection. "This event was the worst-case scenario. It was the event we have feared for a long time," Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said at a Friday evening press conference. "Regrettably, not everybody made it out." About 500 miles (800 km) to the south in Los Angeles County, the 35,000-acre (14,164 hectares) Woolsey Fire was threatening 75,000 homes and more than 200,000 people were under mandatory evacuation early on Saturday. Some of the evacuation orders were for residents within the City of Los Angeles … [Read more...] about Nine killed in California wildfires

A.J. Perez USA TODAY Published 7:35 PM EDT Nov 2, 2018 From Abilene Christian University to Yale, an analysis released Friday showed that 147 college football programs had at least one former player diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The Concussion Legacy Foundation made the data, culled from a study released earlier this year by Boston researchers, public on Friday. Georgia had the most former players (nine) diagnosed with CTE and each member school of a Power Five conference (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC) had at least one player diagnosed. "Very few colleges can say they haven’t had a former player diagnosed with CTE," Chris Nowinski, co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, told USA TODAY Sports. "There’s still no long-term healthcare for former college players and no investment in research. Hopefully this will inspire changes for the next generation of football … [Read more...] about Analysis shows CTE cases linked to 147 colleges
Produced by Lourdes Aguiar and Cindy Cesare [This story originally aired on April 20, 2016] Every morning for the last 37 years, Jim Alt wakes up terrified -- thinking that it's 1978, and that he's just been brutally attacked on Torrey Pines State Beach. "When I become aware that I'm awake, I do not open my eyes. I put my hands on the bed, and I feel for that sheet or I feel for sand of a beach," said Alt. "You still do that?" "48 Hours" correspondent Richard Schlesinger asked. "Yes, sir," Alt replied. "Before my eyes are open I want to know where I'm at." It wasn't always this way. The beach used to be Alt's second home -- a safe place, a fun place. "You were a big surfer," Schlesinger noted. "Absolutely," Alt said. "There's not a feeling on earth like surfing. It's just -- there's a big rush inside your body." Rick Selga has felt that rush. He was one of Alt's good friends back then. "Who was the better surfer between the two of you?" Schlesinger asked Selga. "Uh, probably he … [Read more...] about Were the murders of California teens the work of a serial killer?
