How Newcastle followed in England’s footsteps with Ireland media day
Whether England’s unexpected journey to the World Cup semi-final out in Russia played any part in convincing Newcastle United to hold an open-access media day, we can only surmise. The Three Lions threw open their doors to journalists on the eve of this summer’s major tournament, and put all 23 members of the squad up for interview. Although United’s ‘media day’ was on a smaller scale - there were eight players present at Carton House in the Republic of Ireland - it still represented the same sort of openness which served the England national side so well. In truth, that is where the comparison ends between the Three Lions and Newcastle’s approach to the media. After all, while England headed into this summer’s tournament determined to reconnect with a nation of football fans who had grown disenchanted with their country’s players, this Magpies squad have already established a strong bond with United supporters. Yes Newcastle fans are … [Read more...] about How Newcastle followed in England’s footsteps with Ireland media day
Low had to cut internet because Germany’s players stayed up late playing games
Bierhoff: Perhaps Germany should have dropped Ozil The German camp in Russia was not a haven of peace, according to reports which have been issued by their local media. The reigning champions suffered from a disappointing World Cup campaign as they exited at the first hurdle, losing two of their three group games. According to Bild, coach Joachim Low and general manager Oliver Bierhoff realised that some players were staying up until the early hours of the morning playing video games and decided to take action. On more than one occasion, Low decided to cut their internet connection at the hotel so that they couldn't play online or use their mobile phones. Bild pondered whether all of those distractions hurt the performance of Die Mannschaft, who bowed out at the group phase for the first time in their history. Germany were located in the Vatutinki Spa Complex, 16 kilometres south-west of Moscow within a forest. It was a nondescript site for the players, who resorted to playing … [Read more...] about Low had to cut internet because Germany’s players stayed up late playing games
Stoke want TWO Newcastle players
Stoke City have identified Newcastle United pair Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie as two players they believe can help the Potters gain promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt. But the Magpies have made it clear to Stoke that it will take a sizeable bid to prise either of Gayle or Ritchie away from St James’ Park. The Potters enquired about a £10million move for Gayle earlier in the window, but were told it would take a higher offer for Rafa Benitez to even contemplate selling the forward, and Stoke are understood to have re-registered an interest in the striker who netted 23 goals for United in the Championship in 2016/17. However, Benitez does not want Gayle to leave unless a proven top-flight striker is signed this summer - and, even then, Aleksandar Mitrovic is the forward who United are most keen to offload - so Stoke are believed to be considering alternative options as their hopes of securing a deal in the short term fade. Gayle himself appears happy … [Read more...] about Stoke want TWO Newcastle players
