The Conservative party and Labour have been punished over Brexit by voters in the local elections, with both suffering significant losses. The Conservatives had been expecting a tough time at the polls amid frustration at Theresa May's failure to take Britain out of the EU as planned. Labour also struggled, losing seats amid confusion among voters over the party's stance on Brexit. With around half the results in, the Conservatives had lost 409 seats and Labour 60, while Ukip lost eight. The Lib Dems had gained 283 and the Greens 35. There were 85 more independent councillors. With some analysts predicting overall Tory loses of 800 seats or more, Brexit Minister James Cleverly suggested it would be a good result if they could be kept down to 500. "If it was 500 rather than 1,000 I would be happy with that," he said. With more results coming in by the minute, it was being predicted that the Lib Dems could make as many as 500 gains, while the Greens and Ukip … [Read more...] about Tories and Labour suffer Brexit meltdown in local elections
Local election results 2016
Conservatives suffered huge losses in the local elections. But voters weren’t impressed with Labour either. Jeremy Corbyn’s party also lost council seats - including many in the North East. It meant Labour lost overall control of Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool councils. So what do the local elections tell us about the state of the parties? A bad result for the big two parties The 2017 general election saw the two major parties dominate, receiving 82.4% of the vote between them. It was seen as a return to the days of two-party politics. But these local election results suggest the smaller parties are back in business. The big winners of the night were the Liberal Democrats, who made around 600 gains. The Green Party also gained around 120 council seats. And the number of independent councillors across the country rose by more than 500. Examples included two 'Newcastle First' councillors elected in Newcastle. Conservatives lost more than 1,100 … [Read more...] about Local election results: What do they mean and what happens next?
LONDON (Reuters) - English voters frustrated with the deadlock over Brexit punished both Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives and the Labour Party in local elections, results showed on Friday. Thursday’s voting for seats on local councils in England provided a stark display of how Britain’s 2016 vote to leave the European Union has split voters beyond traditional party lines. Brexit has damaged the standing of the big parties, both of which are internally divided over how or even whether to lead Britain out of the EU, and have struggled to deliver a coherent message to voters on either side. “It just seems voters, period, saying: ‘A plague on both your houses’,” said John Curtice, Britain’s leading polling expert. Frustration sometimes boiled over. One audience member shouted “Why don’t you resign?” before May addressed Conservatives in Wales. Some ballot papers were spoiled, with voters refusing to vote for … [Read more...] about Local elections deliver Brexit bashing for May and opposition
The Greens have hailed a “phenomenal” set of local election results in which the party gained more than 40 seats, some in distinctly non-traditional Green areas in north-east England. The party’s co-leader Jonathan Bartley said that while the Greens had been building gradually in many of the areas where they gained new councillors, they also benefited from pro-remain sentiment and from the recent prominence of global warming protests. With 115 of 248 councils fully tallied, the party had won 52 councillors, an increase of 44 on the equivalent local polls in 2015. The Greens had done well in 2015, in contrast to the other big winner in Thursday’s elections, the Liberal Democrats, whose gains came after terrible results four years ago. The 2015 poll was held on the same day as a general election in which the Greens won more than 1m votes, 3.8% of the total. “It’s been a phenomenal set of results so far, and there’s more to come,” Bartley … [Read more...] about Greens celebrate ‘phenomenal’ local election gains
